Baby poo question

Ds2 is 14 weeks old. He has some allergies, so I've been on an ED with him. His poos have not been normal bf baby poos for two weeks. I had given him some baby gaviscon when we suspected that he had reflux - but that was over two weeks ago as I said. His poos are solid-ish, pasty and mustard coloured. They smell like broccoli - but it's not foul (I don't eat broccoli). And they're small poos that he strains to get out.

Is he constipated?

He has not had anything else except breastmilk since two weeks ago, and I'm worried.

I don't have a very good answer to your question, but my DS always had yellow poo...either that or green...and always pretty liquidy, until we started him on solids a month ago. So as for the color, yellow is fine and normal. However, if you notice him excessively straining to get it out and not much comes, I would think that indicates constipation. Also, you don't mention how his poo has changed in the last 2 weeks, but that would also say something (like if they are far less in volume now and his diet is the same).

Is constipation a known side effect for the drug he was on for reflux?

I would call the pediatrician just to check. GL!

Thanks for the reply. :)

The poo has been small and pasty (almost like play-doh) for the past two weeks without a change in diet.

The paeds office opens next week and we'll be there. He really keeps me on my toes I must say

It does sound like something is not right to me. My pediatrician taught me that the frequency is not the determining factor for breastfed infant constipation, consistency is. Since his consistency is off and he is straining to get them out, it sounds like he is constipated to me. I don't know what the cause is, though!

Straining is TOTALLY normal in a young baby and it does not at all indicate constipation. Not at all. Constipation would be hard, solid, pellet-like bowel movements. When a pediatrician indicates that it's not frequency, it's consistency, they do mean that, but they don't mean that anything other than seedy and runny equals constipation. It has to be hard and formed to be constipation. So when you say "solid-ish" what, exactly, do you mean? If you mean that it's not runny, but that it's actually pasty, like what you might get out of a toothpaste tube or something, that's not constipation. If you mean that it's actually small, formed, turds (lol) then yes, that would be constipation. Babies go through all kinds of changes in BMs, and while there may be something unusual going on, not all babies have seedy poops until they're on lots of solids. Neither of mine did, once we were past the first few weeks. So if he's not having actual turds, then he's not constipated. Unless something besides straining is going on to suggest that he's uncomfortable, there's probably nothing wrong. Straining is absolutely normal. Heck, look up grunting baby syndrome. Some babies strain for HOURS before they're able to poop. Mine both did that, too. And it's normal.

Yeah I agree its probably not constipation.  The medicine might have changed the odor a bit and even the consistancy.  New foods in your diet could also make a difference.  If you are concerned I would certainly ask the Dr, no one knows their child like a mother!  It does sound like his poops are a little bit thicker than normal but it would not be considered constipation yet.  Just make sure he is getting plenty of breastmilk, and I would advise not giving any type of medicine ever unless absolutely necessary, if there is For Sure a problem!

thank you for the replies - they are back to normal runny bf baby poos with a bit of the toothpaste (perfect description!) in the mix.

I know every baby is different, but this little person really tests my calm levels lol, I worry too much I guess.
