I would recommend buying from a local dealer. I learned to sew on a Viking Emerald. There are many reputable brands, but to me, it's finding something that's within your price range, feels good, meets all of your needs and has local support. A local dealer can make all the difference in the world--from being able to call them on the phone to offering instructional classes. Many dealers also have trade-in programs so that's a great way to find a great machine at a good cost. Plus, some have trade-up programs that if you decide you want something fancier in the future, you can trade your current machine for credit toward your new machine. I love my Viking Emerald--it's a great basic machine that I would highly recommend looking at. I learned to sew on a machine that was not computerized or gadgety, and I'm really glad I did.Â
