Holy Hip Pain!

OMG!  I am almost 23 weeks and I cannot believe the crazy hip pains I am having!  It started the night before last in my left hip.  When I went to bed the pain kept me tossing and turning.  Yesterday it hurt but not super bad.  Last night the pain worked it's way into my dreams... I was sleeping on a really uncomfortable bed (in my dreams).  Today the pain is now really bad in my left hip, bad in my right hip, and spreading to my left lower back (I normally have back problems so that's not surprising).  I tried some stretching to help, but that definitely made it worse.  I'm not comfortable standing, sitting, or laying down and it's making it hard to walk.  I'm not a complainer (says my midwife) but this pain is bringing me to tears!  Acetominaphen is only mildly helpful.    My midwife said it could be from lack of cal/mag, which I did run out of a couple days ago and forgot to buy more, but this seems like a lot of pain for only a coupe days without the cal/mag.  I made an acupuncture appointment for tomorrow, and DP just got back from the store with more cal/mag... hoping that will help.

Is anyone else dealing with this?  If so, what are you doing about it?

Yours sounds way worse than mine but I am definitely experiencing something. Not always, but especially when I wake up in the mornings. It feels just like the discomfort I used to get if I slept really solidly on one side all night, except this is often in both hips. I've had a lot of mild but recurrent stiffness/pain in my lower back and hips, and also noticed what could possibly be SPD? PSD? the pubic symphisis thing--but only on my left side, and it's not too bad.

Last week we were at my in-laws and the mattress was much softer than ours (usually I like a pretty firm mattress) and I did notice that the pain let up significantly. I wonder if getting a memory foam mattress topper or something would help?

Also, massage around my hips feels really good. When I do that I can tell the muscles are all tensed up. But again, your pain sounds way more severe than mine--mine is more discomfort than pain. Sorry you're having such a rough time, and I hope you get some relief soon!

I'm having back pain that radiates to my hips and butt as well.  I think it's "posterior pelvic pain" according to Dr. Google.

I remember really bad back pain with DD - it had to go to the chiropractor.  What ended up fixing that was a bike ride (I think it was a pinched nerve or something that got wiggled free on the bike)

This pain is new to me though.

Sorry you're in pain, mama!!!

Hi--I'm largely a lurker here, but thought I'd reply since I've had this pain for several of my pregnancies.  For me, it's sacroiliac joint stress, and I do PT for it.  It hurts especially when I lie down (on my back) or try to roll from one side to the other.  Things that make it worse:  lifting/carrying (like laundry, toddlers), going up & down stairs excessively, not sitting properly (feet should be on the ground, back straight and propped by a pillow, legs uncrossed...I love to cross my legs!  I try to ice it at least once a day, and this helps.  It has always gone away after my pregnancies end; hoping it does this time too!  Oh, and stretches aren't always the best thing for this...it's more a matter of keeping the joint in place.  I try and use my abdominal muscles as well as I can to support the joint, and try to be mindful when I lift things (bend at the knees, try and lift from the legs).  I hope this helps, and that your pain goes away soon!!

I've been having hip pain also this pregnancy.  I've found the days I am less mobile it is better.  The days I am walking and keeping active I am in a lot more pain especially sleeping at night.  My OB and chiropractor said totally normal due to the weight on the hips and that the joints are loose and ready to go for delivery.

I had sciatic pain on top of this on one side for a little while.  It was like a poker being thrust into my joints under the butt muscle.  My chiropractor took care of it and I haven't had that since the adjustment.

Well,  they say tomorrow is another day and that is certainly the case here.  I double dosed on Cal/Mag (says it ok to do so on the label) last night and today, and went for acupuncture this morning and my hips don't hurt at all now.  I think it's just the hormone's loosening up my ligaments in that area.  Today I was fairly inactive and I am sure that helped too.  When I sit down on anything hard it seems to get worse, so I was thinking about getting an exercise ball to use as a chair.  Has this helped anyone else?

I've been seeing a chiropractor for my hip pain for over a month now. It has been pretty bad. My midwife says it's classic sciatic irritation...after you've had one pregnancy, subsequent ones the hip/joint etc. problems just get worse because you're body "gives up" faster.

The chiropractor instructed me not to cross my ankles while sleeping or sitting, and avoid reclining. He also told me to ice it which I did at first from time to time, but...I hate icing things.

Between that, tylenol, pressure, massage, etc. have helped. It's WAAAY worse if I sit on the floor at all, or do a lot of walking.

But yeah...I feel ya, and these are the things that have helped.

I had crippling hip/crotch pain by the end of my first pregnancy.  I could barely walk, rolling over in bed was torture, etc. etc.  The only advice I got was "try to keep your legs close together, don't cross them, and there's nothing we can do".  BAH!

It started earlier the second time around, and someone here on MDC recommended this book: http://www.amazon.com/Relieving-Pelvic-During-After-Pregnancy/dp/0897934806/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1293749894&sr=8-1

It made such an incredible difference.  I'm starting to have the same issues again this time (third pregnancy, due in June) and just pulled it off the shelf for myself again.

Thank you all for your input.  The pain comes and goes.  Prothyraia- I am ordering that book off amazon today.  It looks like it will be really helpful.  I've also decided to get an exercise ball b/c whenever I sit in our chairs the pain gets worse.  I'm trying to not cross my legs as I can see how that would be helpful, but that is a hard habit to break!

I may not have the same type of pain as you but I did get an exercise ball  this week and it's helping a lot -- my pain is gone if I sit on the ball in favor of the sofa.  ;-)
