My DS, who used nap three times a day until this past week, now lays in his bed "talking" (sometimes pretty loudly) instead of sleeping. I'm not sure if I should just let him stay there or take him out if he's not going to go to sleep.... But then again, maybe he does need some "quiet time" to himself?...Thoughts?

15 Month old won't nap but will stay in bed "talking"?
three naps seems like alot for a 15 month old!
we're just going from 2 to 1 nap at that age although she was kind of forced into it because of am daycare so not sure if we would still be at 2 if that hadn't have happened. in any case we dropped the 3rd nap a long long time ago.

but as for the talking, when dd gabs away in her bed i just let her. #1 she's entertaining herself and i like that (plus it's cute!) and #2 her body IS getting a rest. there are times that she's gabbed away and then put herself to sleep. most of the time she'll have enough of it and then i'll have to do some extra work to get her to sleep...but at least i know that we're on our way to a nap. now that i'm pretty sure she's dropping the am nap if she's talking away and not sleeping i'll take her out when she's done...but at least i'v given her the chance to sleep if she needed it. for the afternoon nap though i keep working at it until she actually naps (basically i let her talk away until she starts yelling and then i go in and settle her and start again until she falls asleep.)

IMO, a toddler or preschooler who is in bed, but quiet, or in bed, but happily occupied (even if loud), or in his or her bedroom and not making alarming crashing noises, is functionally sleeping.

ITA that three naps a day seems like a lot (my 15 mo does one two hour nap at midday). But your mileage may vary. If he seems contented, I wouldn't sweat it.
