Anna Karenina

Anybody read this? Want to read this? I'm about 100 pages in, but I keep picking it up, reading 50-100 pages, and putting it down. It does seem like a good novel, and it's the first Tolstoy I've ever read, so I really want to finish it. Anyone with me?

Not me!  I never did make it through it.  I got about 2/3 and gave up.  However, I really wanted to know what happened to the plot line of the farmer guy (it's been a while).  So it became the first and last time I grabbed a copy of cliff's notes for a book.  It wasn't required reading, I just thought I would like it.

Are you still reading it? I'll join you, I already have the book but I've never read it. I just need 2 days or so to finish up the book I'm already reading.

I'm not, but I'm also not finished it, so I could pick it back up smile.gif

I keep looking at this thread and thinking 'I don't have time', but oh, what the heck - I'll join you, too, if you're still in. :) I have way too much on my to read list, but I haven't read AK since college, and have been meaning to pick it back up again.

Sould we have a start day and so many pages per day/week? It would be nice to discuss it because it's somewhat hard to follow.

I should try and read it, too. I'll have to check and see if the library has it. I think I checked it out once before, but just looked at it, saw how long it was, and never even tried. I should really try.

I like the idea of discussing along the way. I am reading on a Kindle, though, so will not have page numbers. Could we go by chapters instead?

Chapters would be fine. I'll start from the beginning smile.gif Quick tip: photocopy the character list and use it as a bookmark. It will prove to be very helpful smile.gif

I'm on chapter 13 right now - not sure how that translates into pages. How far do you all think we should read for the first week?

Oh girls, you're going to regret letting me enter your group, but now that I'm reading I'm super anxious to discuss. Is anyone ready to start yet?

So, I downloaded it to my iPhone (kindle for iPhone) and the translation is completely different than the Penguin version I have been reading. While I've had some difficulty with the Penguin book, I'd feel kind of like a cheat if I read the kindle version...I am in Part 2 of the Penguin book, but I'm going to re-read the easier version to pick up on things I missed and to catch up to where you're all at. So far, it looks like it's these people are reading:

-Motivated Mama
-Owen'nZoe
-SubliminalDarkness
-Arduinna

Raise your hand if you're still in and let's get going! smile.gif

Still here! It's been slow going so far, but I'm gonna get on it!

So, the Penguin is the Pevear/Volokonsky translation? TBH, I'm not sure which translation I've been reading...I think I'll switch over to that version just to be sure.

It's probably good old Constance Garnett, then. :)

Could very well be! The copyright is even only in roman numerals and there's very little info in the book besides the text itself. I also haven't quite paid enough attention to even decipher what the copyright year is. I'm a little rusty on roman numerals.
