I known this is really common but....

Ds will not poop on the potty. It seems like he really wants to but he tells me it hurts. His poops have been pretty large and hard (sorry for the tmi) since he started using the potty so I am pretty sure he is holding his poop in. How do I help him? Is offering a diaper for him to poop in when I can tell he has to go ok? I am really worried about him feeling bad about himself over this. Tia!

Sure! In my admittedly brief experience, I have never known to kid to feel comfy with pooping in the potty right away. My daughter would ask for a diaper to poop in, poop in it, and then take it off, ball it up, and hand it to me. :)  It takes anywhere from a month to 6 months after regular peeing in the potty to get to pooping in the potty.

My 3 year old did both pretty readily, which is WEIRD. ITA with the PP

Is he using a small child potty, or the big toilet with a seat?  I ask because we had a much easier time with pooping in the toilet when we got him his own little potty.  He uses both now, but usually pees in the big one and poops in the little one.

Thanks for the replies. Ds has both a small potty and a seat forth toilet. He refuses to poop in either one. We will just give it time and stay patient. Thanks again.

I remember reading something about this in the No-Cry Potty Training Solution, but I can't remember what it said. You should definitely check out that book though. I love it.

Thanks. I'll try to get it from the library.

I agree with the PPs, but maybe if it is hurting, you could offer some sips of prune juice throughout the day.  Uncomfortable poops is only going to make it all worse.
