31 days to a new housekeeping habit challenge? - Page 4

2 Jan: signed up and did well!

3-8 Jan: away on holidays with family. Tried to help out as much as I could.

8 Jan: DH is cooking dinner ATM. I'll keep the challenge in mind as we eat - will post results later.

Update: left cleanup later than I'd like (overtired kids needing attention), but DH and I decided to watch a movie, so we got the kitchen done before we started the movie.

No action on secondary goals yet, (selling extra fridge and decluttering kitchen), but today is our first full day back from holidays.

9 Jan: Uh oh. I did most of the hand washing but nothing else.

10 Jan: Fail. At nearly midnight, swept floor and wiped accessible surfaces in a big rush before bed, and that was only because I didn't want to leave food scraps sitting overnight. DH put plates in dishwasher. Did nothing else, and there wasn't even much to do because we had take away!

To make up for this, today (11 Jan) I will clear junk off the extra fridge and photograph it in readiness to sell. Bonus points for actually listing it. We could really use the space!

Jan. 4. bag.gif I was a bad girl last night and didn't get this new chore done. No real excuse, I could say that I spent a little more time nursing my son to sleep and I was tired after and wanted to take a bath, which is true, but I still could have done the dishes. I didn't even get the pots done that had been soaking!

Jan. 5. dishes.gif It's only the middle of the day now, so I have time to make more dishes to be washed, but I'm hopeful that they will ALL get done and nothing will be left to soak over night. I'm posting this now so I don't have to come back and hang my head in shame.

Jan. 6. dishes.gif I got them all done, but wasn't able to come on before bed last night.

Jan. 7. dishes.gif Got them ALL done again tonight!!!

Jan.8. dishes.gif Another night when ALL the dishes are done!

Jan. 9. bag.gif I was to tired and we went to bed early.

Jan. 10. bag.gif Again tonight the dishes will sit. I spent the day out with a friend and was so tired I didn't get a chance to do the ones from last night even though there wasn't much. I'm super exhausted right now and will wash my blender before bed, but that's all I have energy for. I'll have to do better tomorrow. I did do some other organizing tonight though. so at least that's something.

I'm way late to the party, but I want to join!

1) Who you are

I'm a sahm to four kids, three I currently homeschool.

2) What your housekeeping struggles are

I was taught good housekeeping, but my mom never did anything. My sister I did all the housework, most of the cooking, and most of the taking care of the two younger kids. I was burnt out, so when I got married I didn't have to clean and didn't. Follow that with some other issues and I'm now 10 years out of the habit.

3) Your goal and how you plan to get there

Baby steps, right? I want to clean the kitchen every night. Stove and counters clean, dish washer loaded and going, all food put away, floor swept, and table cleaned off. I have three kids old enough to help and they seem to be more productive when I work WITH them. I've had it done the last two nights, so I just need to keep it up!

Jan 9 -- went well, mostly because we have to be out quickly for church and we do a lot of prep the night before.  And I ended up home with a few of the kids due to colds.

Jan 10 -- not great.  Had to be out at an appointment and had some prep to do first, but I got off track and ended up rushing through things towards the end of the morning.

11 Jan: Pass! Although I didn't wipe the benchtops until late, everything else was done at a reasonable time. AND I photographed the fridge and listed it for sale!

Jan. 11. dishes.gif The kitchen is back on track! All I have to wash now before bed is my blender, a coffee mug and my glass! I know it will get done b/c I never, ever leave my blender over night.

I am back after being gone cause my dh computer decided to break.  Thankfully, it is fixed.

Even tho I couldn't come on here are report progress, I did pretty good!!

Saturday night, the kitchen was pretty clean.  Nothing really to clean as we ate out and what was dirtied earlier in the day, my mom, sil and I cleaned up after celebrating my twins birthday.  The living room didn't get the attention it needed, but was tidied up after opening gifts.

Sunday: I did clean the living room and even vacuumed the rug.  Dh cleaned the kitchen for me!!

Monday-Tuesday: Kitchen sink was clean both days.  Living room was definitely clean by the time my dh came home!

This morning: I woke to a clean kitchen and a shiny sink!!  I love that!!  Today my kids are in parents day out so I have errands to run then home to clean the house one room at a time and finish laundry.  If I have time, I am going to organize the kids art supplies.

This is really the best thing I have ever done.  I have been pretty good about getting everything done except yesterday I wasn't feeling well and couldn't get to the bathtubs.  I will keep it on my list until I get them done!  Sheepish.gif

Jan 11 -- Good morning.  Had to prep for going out in the afternoon again, so things took a bit longer, but I got a lot done and had plenty of time left over before we had to go out.

Day 10

hide.gif
I had an intense day at work and felt like vegging with DS at night. He was very cranky and went to bed early and I snuggled up with him insead of cleaning.
I didn't have any toys to straighten, but I didn't get many other chores done either.
I'm aiming to vacuum the house and mop today.

Well, didn't get time to come home and clean like I wanted.  I ran errands all day.  Felt good to get so much done outside the house w/o the kiddos.  Supper will be easy tonight so the kitchen shouldn't get too dirty/messy to take long to clean up.  Might give dh that task!  I off to tidy up the living room and vacuum the rug and sweep the floor.

Day 11

Task 1 - toys thumb.gif
Task 2 - table thumb.gif
And broc1.gif I vacuumed the house today. Yay!
Didn't mop, but did 6 loads of laundry, lots of dishes (although not the ones from dinner), ran a bunch of errands, and cleaned out the fridge. Yay! VERY productive day and I got through some major thinking blocks on my work-writing while doing all these tasks. Tomorrow I get to put it all on paper.

January 12th:  Living room looked great for when dh came home!!  I noticed that I didn't clean anything of mine up and I did clean up a bunch of the kids stuff and what was left was my dh's stuff and it was a lot.

Dh cleaned the kitchen last night for me!  I didn't even ask him.

I should have 31 days to spare(due Feb. 23rd)..

1) Who you are

I am dexmillie with w/ two children DS-4.yo., DD 21months and I am due in Feb. (So I will have 3 soon)

2) What your housekeeping struggles are

I have always been very tidy and have routine but after each child I struggle with keeping to a schedule. The first wasn't too bad, I just struggle with cooking and laundry. When I started to get better DD came along soon after. Then along with the two first things..add the bedroom, bathroom.

I find I always have things to do and get so tired and exhasted doing and thinking of it, I end up sitting and taking a break until last minute and then trying to rush it off. Mostly because I am tired..to me having to transport my son to school everyday for only a few hours, feeding them, bathing, entertaining them, potty training, combing hair (I am mix(french and black), DH black, children has hair that needs extra work, greasing braiding, ect.. or it will be dry like brillo), general pick. I tend to get weighed down and just want to relax but look around and it just looks like I barely did anything.

3) Your goal and how you plan to get there

I want to get back to as strict a schedule as I can. I started about a month ago and have been doing good so far as the kids are getting older, now I am going to have a 3rd and I am trying to at least have a schedule that I was following so it wouldn't be to hard. I am planning on simplifying alot. I am not going to have much help at all after the baby is born and I will still need to do something.

Also once things are more simplified and I can get everything looking decent by 6:30 I can relax and just wait until DH comes home so I can take a break and do a little hobby instead of still having to clean and cook even after DH comes home.

Some of the things I have started to keep up with for the last 2-3 weeks are:

1. Having the Kitchen cleaned before DH comes home 90% of the time..this week it has been 100% so far.

2. Cleaning the bathroom once a week (a thorough cleanup).

3. Doing laundry about every 6-9 days (I use to prolong it up to 2 1/2 weeks sometimes, we don't have a normal washer and no dryers..). I only have a portable washer that needs to be hooked up to the faucet and it is small than a one loader. But since I am doing it more often and we have a few lines in our closet I can wash about 3 loads and hang them up. And the rest I can dry in the apartment dryer below us or just do them the next day so I can hang them also.

4. Living room and dining room clean by the time DH comes home. With kids there will always be some toys they are playing with but by that time everything was packed up and vacuum and it doesn't look like anything big.

My next thing to do is finish the bedroom and the bedroom closet to the point that cleaning will be much easier to do..there are always cloths on the floor and things scattered..Also to daily clean around the computer desk that tends to get crowded quickly.

Jan 12 and 13th dishes were done both days! dishes.gif
post #79 of 103

The living room was done long before dh came home.  Gave me time to go through the new toys my twins got for their birthday and put them in containers I bought today.  I have a basket of toys they aren't playing with ready to put in the basement.  I didn't get the rug vacuumed but I will tomorrow hopefully before the kids start playing in there.

I didn't make big supper tonight.  We ended up with chips and salsa and then quesadillas.  Easy and not much to clean up except for the table where my kids got salsa drippings on it!!  I am going to clean off the table and then run the dishwasher before heading to bed.

Day 12

Task 1 - toys luxlove.gif
Task 2 - table thumb.gif

It's been getting easier to clear the table nowadays because there usually isn't much stuff on it. This should be the habit that sticks. Yay!
