Jekyll and Hyde baby

So does anyone else have a baby with a totally different personality once you're anywhere else but at home?

DS is 7 months. He's more or less a high needs baby (75% of the 12 signs of HN). However, that is pretty much only when we\re at home. As soon as we go out he's very calm and peaceful, and in fact a total charming flirt. But at home he is so often just whiny and dissatisfied. People never believe me when I tell them he's a difficult baby. I always find myself saying "Well you should see him at home!" when people tell me what a sweet, angelic baby he is.

Accordingly, he loves to travel. We have gone on 2 trips with him and both times he was so easy, not only flying but on our trip. We just got back from almost a month away travelling, and I was beginning to think maybe he's not a HN baby after all. Well, we've been home all of 7 hours and all he's done besides sleep is whine and fuss. UNbelieveable!

I do love my baby just as he is, I don't want to just complain here. I am only looking for support in knowing other mamas are going through this. I was going to post this in our Spirited Babies group, but I have a feeling other babies who are not necessarily HN are like this, and as I said I sometimes even wonder if DS really is "HN" since he is not like that outside of the home. In any case, I find it very trying at times when he's just nonstop fussing. I do try to get out as much as possible, but it's dead of winter and very icy out so it's limited what we can do out there.

Anyway, DH and I think DS is trying to tell us to become nomads and hit the road permanently, little gypsy baby, lol.

I don't think Cecilia is quite as night and day, but she is definitely a happier baby when she has an audience of more than just mama! She loves people, she loves going places, and she loves seeing new things, so we always get out of the house every day. She is definitely more clingy at home than she is in public, but she doesn't like to be away from me in public either.

I've got a little fuss budget too and he is better when he goes out and is stimulated. My theory is that he gets bored. We have to change things up for him quite a bit. It's not universal. We were out today and he was not cool with the high chair, but he loved looking around at all the people and such. I took him to the library a couple of days ago and he was happy as a clam, just watching all the bigger kids play.

Yup, seven months... hates being home alone with mama. Loves going to Nana's, books n babies, musicals, parties, mattress shopping, whatever. I could have written your first paragraph.

Here is a link to the spirited/high needs baby tribe, which includes a link to the 12 high needs traits as defined by Dr. Sears.
