Chubby Nursing Toddler

Thread Starter

I have up until now been a lurker on this board, but am now to the "past infancy" stage with my nearly 14 month old.  I nursed my older 2 for 25 and 33 months as well.

She is still mostly EBF hardly eats solids.  Kinda could take or leave them, but more only since her 1st b-day.  The threads dealing with weight on this board are always about underweight or average weight toddlers, so I guess we are strange.  My DD is 33lbs!  She is very tall as well (about 33in laid down), but there is no way around the fact that she is a very "big" girl.  I know I am doing the healthiest thing for her weight-wise for life by breastfeeding, but sometimes doubt it a little.

She was born 9lb10oz (actually my smallest baby but by 6 months and 26lbs my largest).  I thought she would slow down after starting to crawl at 7 months and for sure after starting to walk at 11 months.  She was 32lbs on her b-day and so in less than 2 months has gained another pound.  As I write this, I see that she has "slowed down"  but still shouldn't she stop for a while?  My older ones did.  They are boys and she outweighs them at 18 months, and one of them at 24 months!  She also outweighs her 3.5yo cousin!  My boys were chubby babies (but not as much as her) that thinned after a year and are very skinny now at 5 and 8.  DD's waist is actually bigger than the 5yo's.

I guess I am posting just to see if there is anyone esle out there with chubby toddler nurslings.  Is there anything that could be wrong?  She nurses alot and I have just resently started putting her off/distracting her when she asks for "mi-mi".  I try to offer food instead, but it seems like right after I get her to eat a little, she is going to nurse just as much anyway!  I admit I am lazy about pushing the solids.  Its so much easier to just snuggle her up and nurse than fix something for her to maybe eat and then clean up the big mess, but lately I have started trying to feed her more solids because she asks to nurse A LOT and I'm thinking maybe she has reached the point were milk alone is not satisfying.

Ds was pretty laid back about solids until about 14-15 mos when suddenly he was VERY interested. Before that if I didn't have ds appropriate food around it really didn't matter but after that I had to make sure I had food with us at all times that he could have 'cause he was soooo interested.

He was/is also a pretty chubby little guy. I was a little worried that he wasn't slowing down the way I had been told he would. I heard "when he starts crawling" & "when he starts walking" & "when he starts running" but the slow down has been MUCH more gradual than that for him. He seems to have finally stopped gaining in steady increments since his 2nd birthday & I can see that he is starting to focus his growth on up.

In our fat conscious society it's hard not to worry sometimes. Dh & I both struggle with our weight (although we didn't as children) & have had the conversation a few times about ds.
