Ready to make the crib transition.. advice needed!

Hi mamas. I'm pregnant with #2 and since DS (20 months) has been socking me in the abdomen in his sleep lately, I think it's time to move him into his crib. I am a little reluctant only because he has been doing SO well with potty training, and has a dry diaper and goes potty first thing every morning. I am afraid he may regress if we try to make the transition. Should I just go for it and deal with the potty issues or wait until we are on a good routine with it before I make the transition? He's otherwise a good sleeper and naps in his crib well. Do you think I can jump up in time to take him potty if I hear him on the monitor soon enough? Thanks ladies!

Why a crib and not a bed?  Seems to me that you may want that crib for the new babe (even if you cosleep you could sidecar it) and training him to sleep in a crib at his age seems counterproductive.

The crib can convert to a toddler bed - but I thought 20 months would be too early for that?

I don't think 20 months is too young to have his own "real" bed.  I can't speak to the potty issues because my 18 month old is not yet ready, but he has had his own bed since he was about 14 months old.  I had a low bedrail on his toddler bed so he could climb in and out on his own, but wouldn't fall out.  Yesterday I took out the toddler bed and took off the bedrail from the double bed it was side carred with, so now he is sleeping (alone for naps but still not alone all night long...working on that!) on that.  I need to get a stepstool for him though, since the double is too big for him to climb up on his own (although he gets down just fine).

No, I don't think 20 months is too young either, if it works for you and the accessible areas are baby-proofed.  This worked wonderfully with our DD (going on three nights now! yay!) at a tiny 23 months.

You could also consider bringing just the crib mattress into your bedroom, so you would certainly hear him and need not worry about him rolling off the bed.  Congrats on baby #2!

I definitely consider the bed as well. We moved ds to his own bed at 17 or 18 months. As for the morning potty trip - I haven't had a problem getting to him & into the bathroom in time. In fact he often wants to hang out in bed for 5-10 minutes before going to the bathroom. He's been dry at night since 22 months.

I'm another vote for a bed over a crib.  We transitioned ds from his crib (which he only started sleeping in at 10 months old) to a bed at 15 months and he's done wonderfully.  We had a full sized bed ready for him so that dh could pop over and sleep with ds in the middle of the night if he woke up (which he does most every night).
