I think that getting to picky-picky about crucifers is frankly a little nutty.
Â
So many sources say that cooking reduces/neutralizers goitergens in crucifers.

I've had to manage thyroid meds for a little over ten years now, and my body is highly sensitive, so I've had to fiddle with doses. At times, I've been hyperthyroid from slightly too much supplementation. As I've tried to 'come down' from the hyper-over-med high, I ate strawberries and cauliflower and broccoli raw. For me to feel a little less racy in this hyper mode, I had to eat a box of strawberries for breakfast, and for an afternoon snack, while try and consume an entire head of cauliflower and some broccoli *every* day to bring the hyper state down until the lowered med dose took effect (it takes about a month to feel a difference in meds). Now this is a lot of raw veg.! After 3 or 4 days, I'd be pretty sick of strawberries, not to mention cauliflower and broccoli!!!!!Â
Â
I mentioned this to my ND at the time and he laughed. He wondered how long I could keep eating like that! And pointed out - "see, you have to eat a lot of that stuff to inhibit thyroid activity."

Really, it must come down to moderation. Make some sprouts and enjoy them!
Â

So I was just reading the WAPF page on crucifers, and they're down on sprouts in particular, and so-so on crucifers in general, for the assorted food chemicals--not salicylates or amines, but nitriles and gluco-somethings and indoles IIRC. The argument there is that moderate (or small) amounts may be fine, but crucifers can increase the need for iodine, the goitrogens block iodine receptors? I think I got that right. Now, they can come up with an argument against anything EXCEPT eggs and meat (and they're pretty stingy in their discussion of the problems of dairy) so I'm not sold that they're completely objective, but maybe consider your iodine intake if you go the broccoli sprout route?

Theloose--have you tried milk thistle? Though, from everything I've read, it seems to _be_ healthy but not necessarily make people _feel_ healthier, so you're looking for a bit more bang for your buck. I'm about to re-start my milk thistle after a long hiatus, the larger capsules that I am going to fill should solve my problem of how to take it (loose ground seeds just weren't happening regularly).Â
