potty seats

What type of potty seat do/did you use?

Our DD is 18 months old and showing signs of being ready to use a potty. She will now have big pees less often instead of many littler pees. She will also tell you that she poo'd and sometimes that she pee'd. But a couple of days ago she was saying "pee, pee, pee" and tugging at her pants and walking back and forth to the bathroom. I asked her if she wanted to go to the potty and she said yes. I put her on the toilet, she didn't pee but was happy with herself.

We want to now buy a potty chair for her and put her on it a couple of times a day...or go with her wants if it is different than that.

Our house is too chilly to let DD run around nude, and she cannot yet take off her own clothes. Does this mean that she is too young to potty learn?

What type of potty chair did you get?

What do you look for in a potty?

I kinda like the ones that go on the toilet, but our main floor bathroom is very cold, so I was thinking one that is a stand alone type and putting it in the warmer living room.

Thanks for any insight.

We only ever have had a seat that goes on the big toilet. We have only one toilet in our house & it is upstairs (yes that means I ran up the stairs a LOT).

We tried one that was padded 'cause I thought it would be more comfy for him but it turned out the hole was too small for his penis to hang down inside without smooshing it so we switched to one that was (cheaper) hard plastic but had a oval hole instead & that has worked great for us.

I don't believe you have to naked. We never did - it just means more laundry - which with such little clothes is not really that big a deal.

We had one little potty and that's it.  I started putting DS on the big potty around 22 months.  We didn't have a potty seat for it, just put him on it.  So we did a combo of the little potty and the big potty.  We didn't do naked time either.  We just started offering the potty early (every bath time, and sometimes after I'd change his diaper, I'd ask if he wanted to go potty).  He eventually trained himself.  Shortly after he got his poos under control I got rid of the little potty.  (I so much rather not clean it out).  I must say, it was nice not having him dependent on something to go over the big potty.  It made going in public or away from the house much easier.  But, if it helps, by all means get something for the big potty.  I'm just letting you know it's not always necessary.

Honestly, our main reasoning for buying the potties we did was that they were by far the cheapest we found at Target, plus they were made of recycled plastic which was a nice bonus. It can be a potty chair on its own or the top comes off and can fit on a toilet like a potty seat and the base can be used as a step stool. DD has always preferred to sit on the big potty with the step stool underneath so she can put her feet on it. My MIL has a Dora the Explorer potty seat that fits on the toilet at her house and I've found that DD gets distracted by the fact that Dora is on the seat. Maybe it's because she's more used to using our plain plastic seat, but it can be hard to actually get her on the potty at MIL's because it's decorated with Dora. The seat we have is also pretty flat so it travels well. We haven't used it in public yet, but she's used it at my mom's and DH's grandmas without a problem.

If your DD is telling you when she has to go pee, or even when she has peed, then she's probably ready to start PLing. We started when my DD would ask to have her diaper changed, which was every single time she peed. We were going through a LOT of cloth diapers for awhile there, but now she uses the potty almost every time. We usually only have one wet diaper a day and she almost always wakes up dry from her naps. She actually woke up dry this morning too, which I was pretty excited about.

Just remember that it takes time and not to push or pressure her to use the potty. We started PLing when DD was 22 months, she's now 28 months and still not completely trained.  It can be really frustrating, but just keep at it and she'll get it.

I bought one like this for the main bathroom and borrowed a couple of plastic ones for other spots in the house.

My winter born kids hit 2 and a half at peak summertime. So I did a modified "toilet training in one day" approach. Worked well.
