Positive on New Years Eve - Now what?

Morning all,

I'm gonna say I'm cautiously pregnant as last time I posted on here I lost the pregnancy that day. :( that was October.
Test came up a lot earlier this time and I'm sure a hell of a lot more tired.

Any ways last time I only tested positive at almost 6 weeks so by the time I got to the doctor it was to confirm the miscarriage. :(

Today I rang the doc's up. I wanted to talk to them because I have a hellova cold and serious cough, which of course I stopped taking anything for it and I assume that they would want confirm your pregnancy?

Anyway's that's what I'm asking, you get your BFP. You call the doc's and... what happens then?

I spoke to the receptionist and said I need to see the doc, I've got a positive preg test and there's silence at the end of the phone until she says "And?"
I ask her if I'm not supposed to come in and get it confirmed or anything?

she was really not helpful, was I not supposed to go to the doc yet? Have I done something wrong?
I dont have an appointment till Thursday - I'm worried that me fighting this cold will affect babies development?
Are you not supposed to call the doc's just yet? everything I read says, BFP - contact your healthcare provider.

Hope that someone who's done this before can help out :)

Hi - congratulations and good luck...hope this time things go well for you.  You did the right thing contacting your GP - most health providers will want to see you asap after you test positive, if for no other reason to make sure you are taking your folic acid, to encourage to you to stop smoking etc (were this the case) though in my case they have never retested to confirm pregnancy, just taken my word for it with a positive test taken at home.  Sounds to me like you just got a sniffy receptionist.  Saying that, I see you are in the UK (as am I) and I've noticed since last having a baby here (2006 - also had one in Texas in 2009) the general attitude has become much more laissez faire - fewer prenatal appointments unless there's a particular problem, assumption that pregnancy is a healthy state, not one requiring medical attention etc.  However, the community midwife team will encourage you to get in touch and/or make an appt if there is anything you are worried about and they would certainly want you to check in at the beginning of pregnancy.  I suggest you call back and ask for a check-in appt with the midwife.  As far as your cold goes, sympathies, but I really wouldn't worry about it affecting the baby or pregnancy.  Other than making you feel lousy a cold and cough really won't do any harm.  You did right to stop taking medication, though paracetamol (tylenol) is fine during pregnancy.  Again, your doctor or midwife wouldn't be able to do anything if you did have an earlier appointmet, so just stay warm and look after yourself and good luck with you appointment and the rest of your pregnancy.

my OB's office doesn't do the first appointment until 10 weeks. but they would be willing to take you earlier if you had any concerns....even just to chat.

you're ok with the cold...i would only go in if you wanted advice on what you could or couldn't take for it.

congrats!

My midwife had me come in to POAS to verify.  The nurse sat down and gave me a talk and list of do's and don'ts and made my first appt. when I would be 8 wks.  However they apparently realized I was 40 after I left and looked at my birthdate and had me come in the next day for an US for viability. I was only 5 weeks so it was too early so I went back 2 weeks later and then they did another at my first appt. So sometimes certain circumstances call for different procedures so I would say you are right to call and tell them you are preg. and that you are sick.

My OB's office had me come immediately for a blood HCG test (quantatative) and to test my progesterone levels.  But I wasn't seen for an appt until about 8 weeks (that was all the original blood work and a pap).  Then I started going for more regular appts around 12 weeks.
