does anyone know much about how the priesthood holder stuff works in the mormon church? i know very little about their religion, and i think i'm missing something. i get that bill thinks that only men have it. so is your priesthood holder your dad, and then when you get married, your husband? what happens if you end up a widow? or is it, once you have a priesthood holder, you're set for life? what are the rules/responsibilities of being a priesthood holder? why is it such a big deal that barbara wants it too? i know lots of other religions that have women in places of 'power' so to speak. please educate me, lol.

I don't know Shelley, I'm interested to hear so myself.
Re: the comments about the show being terrible... I kind of agree with ya'll, but I kind of like it right now. It's a mess and all over the place... but I like it. Then again, after spending so much time with a show, I can't not like it anymore :) I have never gotten so frustrated with a show to quit watching it after I put so much time in. Maybe after watching Lost I'm just willing to let my TV shows walk all over me

OK, HOLY CRAP!!!!! She was also the little sister in Donnie Darko AND Samara in The Ring!!!!!!! I knew that girl looked familiar!
Priesthood holders are allowed to be church leaders, pass the sacrament, give blessings, etc. If it's an important ordinance in the gospel (baptism, sealings/weddings, etc.), a man does it. Wikipedia has a whole page on Latter-day Saints Priesthood. Generally Wikipedia gets their LDS info mostly right.
You can PM me with other questions. I'm a former mormon so I have no qualms talking about the "sacred/secret" stuff that mormons are under oath not to discuss.

Along those lines, the thought did cross my mind that Barb may leave Bill behind and explore a female relationship. Not with Margene but with a woman closer to her age that has similar life expereinces. My reasoning is that she seems to feel so strongly about her new feelings and that maybe she will be seeking a radical change. Though I do think her and the casino guy would have been a good match.
I hope the writers don't go down the student/teacher road, a 37 yo and a young 15 yo is way too creepy. (is she 15 or 16? creepy either way)

What is "secret" about the Priesthood?
This is a copy/paste from lds.org
The priesthood is the eternal power and authority of God. Through the priesthood God created and governs the heavens and the earth. Through this power He redeems and exalts His children, bringing to pass "the immortality and eternal life of man" (Moses 1:39). God gives priesthood authority to worthy male members of the Church so they can act in His name for the salvation of His children. Priesthood holders can be authorized to preach the gospel, administer the ordinances of salvation, and govern the kingdom of God on the earth.
Male members of the Church may begin their priesthood service when they reach the age of 12. They begin by holding the Aaronic Priesthood, and they later may qualify to have the Melchizedek Priesthood conferred on them. At different stages in their lives and as they prepare themselves to receive different responsibilities, they hold different offices in the priesthood, such as deacon, teacher, or priest in the Aaronic Priesthood and elder or high priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood.
For a male member of the Church to hold the priesthood, an authorized priesthood holder must confer it on him and ordain him to an office in that priesthood (see Hebrews 5:4; D&C 42:11; Articles of Faith 1:5).
Although the authority of the priesthood is bestowed only on worthy male members of the Church, the blessings of the priesthood are available to all—men, women, and children. We all benefit from the influence of righteous priesthood leadership, and we all have the privilege of receiving the saving ordinances of the priesthood.
The most important exercise of the priesthood takes place in the family. Each husband and father in the Church should strive to be worthy to hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. With his wife as an equal partner, he presides in righteousness and love, serving as the family's spiritual leader. He leads the family in regular prayer, scripture study, and family home evening. He works with his wife to teach the children and help them prepare to receive the ordinances of salvation (see D&C 68:25–28). He gives priesthood blessings for direction, healing, and comfort.
Many members do not have faithful Melchizedek Priesthood holders in their homes. However, through the service of home teachers and priesthood leaders, all members of the Church can enjoy the blessings of priesthood power in their lives.
Priesthood Quorums
A priesthood quorum is an organized group of brethren who hold the same priesthood office. The primary purposes of quorums are to serve others, build unity and brotherhood, and instruct one another in doctrines, principles, and duties.
Quorums exist at all levels of Church organization. The President of the Church and his counselors form the Quorum of the First Presidency. The Twelve Apostles also form a quorum. Seventies, both General Authorities and Area Authorities, are organized into quorums. Each stake president presides over a quorum of high priests, made up of all the high priests in the stake. Each ward or branch normally has quorums of elders, priests, teachers, and deacons. High priests are also organized in wards, serving in high priests groups.
Home Teaching
From the time priesthood holders are ordained to the office of teacher, they have the opportunity and responsibility to serve as home teachers. In this way they work toward fulfilling their duty to "watch over the church always, and be with and strengthen them" (D&C 20:53).
Home teachers have a sacred duty to be the Church's first source of help to individuals and families. They visit their assigned members at least monthly. In serving and visiting their assigned members, they support parents in their responsibilities, teach the gospel to each family member, nurture friendships, and help members prepare to receive temple ordinances and live worthy of the blessings of the gospel.
Leaders in wards and branches ensure that home teachers are assigned to each family or individual. They follow up with home teachers to help meet each member's spiritual and temporal needs.
Priesthood Keys
The exercise of priesthood authority in the Church is governed by those who hold priesthood keys (see D&C 65:2; 124:123). Those who hold priesthood keys have the right to preside over and direct the Church within a jurisdiction. For example, a bishop holds priesthood keys that enable him to preside in his ward. Therefore, when a child in that ward is prepared to be baptized, the person baptizing the child must receive authorization from the bishop.
Jesus Christ holds all the keys of the priesthood. He has given His Apostles the keys that are necessary for governing His Church. Only the senior Apostle, the President of the Church, may use (or authorize another person to use) these keys for governing the entire Church (see D&C 43:1–4; 81:2; 132:7).
The President of the Church delegates priesthood keys to other priesthood leaders so they can preside in their areas of responsibility. Priesthood keys are bestowed on presidents of temples, missions, stakes, and districts; bishops; branch presidents; and quorum presidents. A person who serves in one of these positions holds the keys only until he is released. Counselors do not receive keys, but they do receive authority and responsibility by calling and assignment.
Exercising the Priesthood Righteously
Priesthood holders must remember that the priesthood should be a part of them at all times and in all circumstances. It is not like a cloak that can be put on and taken off at will. Any ordination to a priesthood office is a call to lifelong service, with the promise that the Lord will qualify priesthood holders to do His work according to their faithfulness.
Priesthood holders must be worthy in order to receive and exercise priesthood power. The words they speak and their everyday behavior affect their ability to serve. Their behavior in public must be above reproach. Their behavior in private is even more important. Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord declared that "the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness" (D&C 121:36).
I didn't say the Priesthood was secret (though there a certainly priesthood ordinances you will never find on the church's website). I just said that if anyone has questions about the sorts of things current members won't and can't talk about they can PM me.

Too late on the ick-factor of the tutor and Carollynn. I wouldn't be surprised if they made Barb a lesbian simply b/c they seem like they're willing to just do any darn thing this season. Anyone else read the credits and only notice 1 staff writer? Has it always been that way?
I just rewatched the DIVORCE episode.
I am chuckling at the irony of Ben wanting to intervene when his parents talk about divorce and his mom doesn't take the sacrament, but then he goes and gets with a stripper. And, Bill...just a horny old goat, putting his pecker in everything he can convince himself is within his testimony...worried about his wife wanting the priesthood and worrying about how "anyone can say anything" in religion. Yes, they can, Bill. That's how religions start. All of them!
I think I've figured out what the deal is. Big Love used to be a drama, but now it's a comedy!
They could have at least warned us about the genre change.

Just finished watching this weeks episode. I can't even figure out why I'm still watching this show, other than I guess I'm determined to see it through till the end since it's almost over. It's like watching a train wreck. This was one of the most horrific episodes of a tv show I've watched. All of a sudden the writers decide that the UEB owns the land and rents it to Home Plus, when the previous storyline was that the EUB loaned Bill the money to start the business. They just needed a new twist to tie the two together since they worked out the loan drama already.
And we are supposed to believe that even though Heather knows that the Church has a crusade against the Bill, she will go tell her Bishop that Margene was 16. Uh huh, sure. That makes sense. NOT. She tells her Bishop they are great people that don't deserve what is happening and then gives the LDS church ammo against them. Totally stupid writing. Heather's character is not Rhonda, she is a college student that has a brain and knows how to use it. I'd like to see some consistancy in the characters, other than psycho Nikki.
And Nikki, could she be anymore clueless and self centered that she spends an entire evening with her daughter and the man she is having an affair with and thinks he has a crush on her? As helicopter mom as they write her character and given the compounds older men teen girls problems you'd think she would suspicious.
Again we see the culmination of the stupid storyline of how Bill has to marry Nikki to protect the 16 year old that will be a legal adult in 2 years. The whole wedding made me want to barf.

A few things.
Did anyone notice the look the teachers mom gave Carolynn? Im wondering if its going to come out that this isnt the first time hes gotten involved with an undersage student, OR, perhaps he carolynn really resembles a girl he used to date and died or something. I also couldnt help but notice the age difference is pretty darn close to what Margen and Bill were when they got sealed.
I have a super hard time with Lois and Franks Marriage. But I suppose i have never played witness to a purely toxic relationship, so that could be my blindspot. We have come full circle though, if you remember, they scene in which we MET Lois and Frank 5 years ago, he was laid up on the couch, almost DYING from some kind pof poisoning. lol
I felt so bad for Barb in the scene she caught the other three resealing to one another. Like she was the odd kid not picked for Dodgeball or something. Although I am starting to get annoyed with her defiance. Im not a hugely religious person, so maybe I dont understand, but shes hoping to have the love and support of her family to see her through and agree with all these changes she wants to make that go directly against their basic belief system. What exactly did she expect was going to happen?
And seroiusly, I dont remember hearing anything about the actors of Joey and Wonda not coming back. Where are they?

I couldnt even follow this part of the storyline, WAY to confusing.

Forgot about this, but yea, what a JOKE. The whole time she was talking to her Bishop, I thought, ACKKKK, how freaking obvious can you GET???????

I dont think its to off the mark to categorize Nikki as a DEFINETE narcassist with scociopathic tendancies.

Just finished watching the episode. Am I just tired or were Carolynn and the teacher really open about being sort of lovey dovey at the wedding reception? Okay, I have to agree with you hear about Nikki. She is totally clueless. She didn't notice the chemistry between her daughter and the teacher? I think the teachers mother knows something is going on between the two. She noticed but Nikki didn't?
I've had it with Barbs defiance. I felt bad for her for a hot second when she witnessed the resealing but she didn't want to take part in it.
Seriously Heather?
ETA: I think Nikki's mom (forgot her name) is setting up Albee for something. Given her history with Roman and past issues with Albert, I'm not buying her loyalty routine to him. When his wife left and decided to stay at the shelter I think she saw it as her opportunity to get on his good side.

A few things.

Wasn't it also odd that the typically clueless Margene is the one that notices the teacher thing and appears to be concerned about it ( judging from her facial expression), when they are writing the story that Margene was the same age when she got together with Bill?
None of this makes any sense.
It certainly doesn't especially the statutory rape charges and Barb being pulled into a police car in the cold without a coat. I have a feeling something bad is going to happen to one of the children. They made two references yesterday to those guns and I can't help but think they're setting us up for something unpleasant.
When I saw the reviews for the last three episodes, I couldn't help but think, "yay! there's only three episodes left to this nonsense." LOL

What? Only 3 episodes? I thought this season was going to 12 like it always has!
Ok, went to check on IMDB and it looks like Season 1 & 2 had 12 episodes, Season 3 had 10, and Season 4 had 9. How odd!
I can't even begin to predict where this show will end.
I am feeling for Barb. I feel like she was thrown into this in the beginning (dying from cancer and wanted another woman to take care of her family) and now that she's speaking up and saying that she'd like to be her own person they're upset with her. Bill. Ugh. I don't like being told that you can't do something just because you're a woman. Especially when it comes to God. It really bothers me. Talk about "putting a woman in their place" and setting up a perfect system for abuse. I will just stop, otherwise I'll work myself up into a rant and it will never end!
All this material they've introduced this year (the dementia, Margie's age when they married, Nikki's daughter and the teacher, Barb going all rogue, Albee, Albee, Albee...) is stuff that would lay the groundwork for many seasons to come. Not the material to introduce in an abrupt, final season.

I can't believe there are only three episodes left in the final season. How are they going to wrap all this up in a way that will satisfy long-time viewers? I smell a big disappointment brewing, and it's making me mad.

I don't know, I see it all being thrown in until one after the other after the other to create a giant storm that destroys them all.

As awful as it is, it's one of the few things I look forward to each week. Sad I know but I'm going to be sorry to see it end.
