Confusion just before breakthrough?

My one year old is just coming off of about 5 weeks of constant illnesses, which caused some EC regression.  We're just starting to get back on track, but now we're entering a period of confusion.  He has just started signing potty and making very distinctive pee and poop sounds.  But he doesn't always make them consistent with when he needs to go.  It almost seems like he's experimenting with his new found communication skills.  If I make this sound what will happen?  Like he has a vague idea that he should make the sound before he goes and sometimes he does.  Other times it happens after he's gone or at a totally random time that doesn't seem to correspond with elimination at all.

Is it normal to have some confusion/experimentation with signs just before it really clicks?  Are we on the verge of a breakthrough?

That sounds right in line with how my dd learned all her signs.  She would begin by merely practicing the sign and then all the sudden she would begin using it correctly.  Although, she will get confused still at times and sign potty when she wants to nurse and vise versa.  Sounds like your LO might be on the verge!
