The funk was because of the buildup of cream on my grains.  I just rinsed them in lukewarm milk and they smell way better.  They were still very slimy so I hope that by changing the milk frequently they will make a full recovery.

I found this information buried somewhere on Dom's site about how pasturization makes the cream stickier or something.. but now I can't find it to post a link.  Anyhow, hopefully my milk wasn't too warm and the grains will recover.

OP

When it was ripe it used to smell like raisins.  Now it smells super funky, like rotten milk....  :(  Is there any hope of revival?  I am changing the milk every 12 hrs now.
