No interest in potty at 33 mos-it is normal right?

I just don't sweat this stuff usually but I want to transition my son to the local Montessori school at 3 and he will need to be potty trained.

He shows NO interest. He tells us when he is pooping, likes to sit in the bathroom with us (but not on his chair), likes to talk about it etc.

He does have cerebral palsy and has some right side weakness. He was slow to walk (22 mos) but other then that meets or exceeds his milestones. He can't use the actual toilet because his right side is not strong enough to support himself. So he needs the small chair that sits on the floor.

I am not into stickers and rewards, and really I don't see how they apply since he refuses to have anything to do with the potty. I would have to use force to have him sit on it and I am unwilling to do that.

Argh. I don't know why all of a sudden I am so stressed about it-I don't care what other people think. Until I start reading about how so and so's son was trained at 24 mos and dry at night by 26 mos that is.

I think you will have to wait until he is ready, and that might mean putting off Montessouri....  What is the toddler wisdom.... While you can prevent a toddler from doing something, you can't make a toddler do anything they don't want to do.... if there is no interest despite you bringing it up and such, I think you will need to wait.

Comfort yourself with this stat, average age for Potty training  in the US is 35 months for girls, and 37 for boys.  Average.  So that factors is all those early trainers....

My little lady is 34 months, and while she goes on the potty some, we are SOOO not there yet either.

My son trained 2 weeks before he turned 3, in literally 3 days' time, after showing NO interest in the potty prior to the day we started.  So it totally can happen. He was definitely ready and the brain-body link was there.

My daughter was out of diapers at 3 yrs 2 months.  Hers was quite the drawn out process; she started beign reliable to go potty naked before she was 2, but she didn't like always being bottomless and the second anything was on her (even just a dress that covered her nakey butt) she'd pee in it, and that went on for over a year before she finally was able to wear underwear and clothes and keep them dry; then it took almost another year for her to be dry at night.  Her brain-body link took a lot longer to click.

Thank you mamas. I appreciate the responses. I am willing to put it off indefintely if necessary.

Thankfully my husband doesn't care either-he is only concerned because I am. We will let him continue on as he is.

Ha! My daughter will only use the potty if she is completely naked.  No socks allowed even.... sounds like this is not completely unheard of....
