Dog eating cat poop... help!

My dog seems to think the litter box is his own personal treat box. YUCK!!! Nothing like a cute puppy coming up to you with poop breath.

What can I do to keep him out? I clean the box out regularly, seems he goes in there several times a day just to check.

I can't watch him every second, and I am getting really sick of vacuuming up cat litter. Any ideas?

Move it where he can't get to it. It is irresistable for some dogs and you will not be successful in stopping it unless you remove the temptation.

any ideas where?
We have a ranch, so I don't have a basement or anything like that where I can install a cat door. I had to do something similar for the food, it is now on a countertop. I just cant imagine the litter box on the kitchen counter :)

Yeah not on the counter for sure!! ROTFLMAO.gif

We had luck with using a baby gate (the accordion kind) and putting the cat box behind it. We raised it off the ground high enough for the cat to fit, but too low for the dog.

Would that work?

A friend of mine installed a cat door in a coat closet. They don't use the closets for coats anymore, but it makes a handy place to keep the litterbox. Dogs and small children can't get to it. (Though my puppy tried to squeeze through she she was three months old and got stuck! LOL!) Above the box they have shelves for household cleaning supplies and the like so that the space isn't wasted.

I just found a solution to this problem a few days ago! There's this litter box called Clevercat, which is a covered box with an opening on the top instead of the side. I think this could easily be replicated with a big plastic storage bin and a lid with a hole cut into it if you're on a budget. Petsmart has them if you want to look at the picture. My cat figured it out on day one and the poop eating has completely stopped. Give it a look see. hope this helps!
