Christian parents that are doing Bible as a core subject -- with younger kids .... talk to me

My oldest son is 5 and not "techinally" Kindy age till this fall due to his BD.  we have been homeschools a loose PK4/5 combo with some Kindy -- nothing pushy, he has some skills and some intrests and beyond that w e focuse on OT and ST and stuff like that.

we read the Bible daily; we have been useing Bible Story Bibles, but DS1 (5) got a superhero Bible for Christmas and we have been reading that one, but while it is a translation written on a 3rd grade level, it is still beyond DS1 to some extent.

Also I ge the feeling that just reading Bible text to him, is really not the best option.

I am wondering what apprach other parents have taken in including the Bible as a core subject --

We have a book called Examining the Scripture Daily.  It's meant for adults, but DD (age 3) likes me to read from it.  The passages are short and take only a minute or two to read.  We are Jehovah's Witnesses so we get all our literature from the Kingdom Hall (church).  We also have a great children's bible story book (also from the KH), with pictures.  She seems to like that one too.  Honestly, though, she learns the most from sitting in church with me and from going to the weekly bible study with us.

For Bible stories at their level, we really like the ones Rod & Staff sells.

They have a little brown one that goes along with a coloring book, and my little ones love it.

For slightly older kids, they have one called something like The Eigermier's (sp) Story Bible that is also very good.  Ours is blue and has a picture of Jesus walking on the water on the cover.

I love Rod and Staff.  I also love that they tend to be inexpensive, so DH doesn't mind when I order a lot.  =)

There is a site called Rod & Staff Books dot com and they let you look inside R & S books.  I really recommend them!

We do also just read to them out of the Bible, in little chunks, and explain it.  They like repeating verses, even if they are simplified versions.

We also use Rod & Staff. My kids are a little older being 8 and 6 so I also use the workbooks that you can get for them (and they're only a few $ each!)  for English and Grammar.  I love Rod & Staff, for the price, you just can't go wrong.  We also got coloring books to go along with the stories.

take a look at Leading Little Ones to God - DH and I both hold Master of Divinity degrees, and are very impressed with this book as a study of theology for very young children. We also LOVE the Jesus Storybook Bible for the way it weaves Bible stories into one meta-narrative - the Story of Jesus.

Having the Bible as our Core subject is the main reason why we homeschool!!

We read from 101 Favorite Stories from the Bible by Ura Miller. And we are going through Rod & Staff Bible Stories and Coloring - I do line our stories from the book with what we are working on in Rod & Staff.

When we begin 1st grade, I bought Bob Jones University Press's Bible Truths for grade 1.

They also have K5 Bible curriculum as well.

And of course, we bring Jesus into all other subjects.

We're using this right now as well. We also have a Bible based coloring and activity book he likes to use.

Next year, we'll be using the Egermeir Bible mentioned above.

we just do family devotions, but next year (when my daughter will be in 4th grade) she'll be using CLE bible curriculum.  up until now, we have enjoyed the bible reader by rod & staff & now we use a bible daily devotion for kids (basically the bible broken up into 365 readings for kids, similar to the one i use personally...just a different translation).  it has a couple of questions after each story.  i also ask my kids to tell me one thing they remember from the story, etc.  our church starts bible curriculum in grade 3 (she'll continue with it until confirmation in 6th grade), so my daughter is doing that this year.  my son's class is still learning through bible stories and crafts.  hth

I LOVE 1001 Ways to Introduce Your Child to the Bible.  It has activities for every single book of the Bible...every.single.book. And it has activities for ages 2-12 (maybe older even?) I love the activities and lessons and it is really easy to follow and know how long the activity will take to prep, what age it is for, and more.

Highly recommend it! I love it so much that when I lost my copy before we even started using it...I bought another one. And then of course, I found the one I lost! lol

No, I didn't know that other book exists. I wonder if it is good? It is too bad there are very little reviews on these books. I LOVE the one I have! As we have been going through the Bible, all the kids Bibles and even our Heart of Dakota curriculum (Christian preschool program) skips from Exodus to Joshua. So we have stopped that for now and are focusing on the books that are skipped by using the 1001 book. My son learned about offerings to God through the book of Leviticus. I had him go find something in the house that he would give to God...he chose a toy zebra. LOL Obviously he got that they often gave animals to God. So of course, a zebra! LOL Then he was like "Oh! I know!" And he set off to do something "secretively". He drew a rainbow and cut it out. He said it is for God and he wants to give it to God on Sunday. So he wrote on the back To God    Love, xxxx. So sweet! So lot's of learning skills can be done through that book all while you learn the Bible...cover to cover...every single book! Love it!

I have been wanting to walk though the Bible, not just popular Bible Stories, with them (or at least him, the older).  And we've been TRYIN G to read The Super Hero Bible http://www.amazon.com/Super-Heroes-Bible-Jean-Syswerda/dp/031070202X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1297386641&sr=1-2-spell  buttttttttttttttttttt it is beyond him.  Understandably he is only 5!!

this book (1001 Bible) sounds perfect.  I can't wait to get a hold of it.
