Just moved and I'm a little worried

Our family just moved to a new state (and therefore a new school district) and I'm already beginning to sense that DS might be having some problems related to boredom, particularly in math.  In his last school, the teachers in every grade he's attended so far (K-3) went out of their way to differentiate for DS, giving him extra work, more advanced problems, and grouping him with the other kids who were advanced in math.  Yesterday he came home from his new school, upset because his teacher "put his name on the board" (1st warning) for "looking bored" during math class.  They are working on symmetry, something DS has understood since we started folding paper as a toddler eyesroll.gif.  No wonder he looked bored...  I don't know if his test scores have been forwarded to the new school yet, so maybe she doesn't realize that he's advanced well above grade level in math.  Still, I have a feeling I may need to advocate a lot more for him than I had to at his last school.

I would go talk to the teacher immediately.  No one should get their name written on the board for looking bored!  That is awful!  My daughter would be so upset.  I would let her know where he is and ask what can be done so his needs are met.

I've already responded to JayGee elsewhere, looking bored can mean a lot of things, and filtered through a child it's never very clear what exactly transpired.

It's a new teacher, new school, new district, new state.  JayGee, do you have copies of those test scores?  Even if the school has then, it's quite possible the teacher doesn't.

Learning from my past mistakes ;) I'd act quickly to meet the teacher, talk about curricula and ask how she wants you to work on any gaps that might crop up, and show her where your DS was in math in his previous school.  To start, I'd innocently cast it as a mismatch in curricula while producing work and test scores that show significantly more.

I agree with Geo here.  And like I said elsewhere, definitely get in to see the teacher ASAP.  I'm sure the teacher is just starting to get to know your son, so there will be a little bit of that going on.  I don't think I would even address the name on the board thing, unless it becomes a pattern.  For now, I would just focus on opening a communication with the teacher to let her know where your son is at.
