About to see an unknown ped- worried about being lectured to

17 mo ds is unvaxed, still breatsfeeds, cosleeps, and has never had a well baby visit, He's been sick for the last two weeks now, and I think it's time to go to the doctor as he's just getting progressively worse.  I suspect it's a sinus infection.  I'm taking him to the student health clinic as that's the only thing my student insurance will cover.  I have no idea what the doctors/np's are like there.  I need some quick one liners in case they start giving me grief over any of the of above health choices.  I am not very good at being assertive.  Ready, go!

Since it's the student clinic I would just gloss over. If it's walk-in, they might not ask as much as a pediatrics office.

The bf may not even come up, and if it does just roll off "oh yeah the WHO says two years, so that's what we're going by"

For vax, I just say "no, we have a history of vaccine reactions" and no one's ever pushed further than that-if they did I'd have one ready, like his dad quit breathing after his dtp or smth. I'd also say that you were delaying til she was two. We are "waiting til he's a year" tho we probably won't do any, that's mostly to shut people up.

For the wb visit thing, was your dc checked out at all as an infant by your midwife? My mw did the first 2mo and he's just 6mo so I just kinda breeze past it, "oh our mw was so great doing his early visits, and then we had a hangup with insurance; he's so healthy he's just never needed a doctor before."

Your post actually makes me feel better because I feel along the same lines as you and we've not sought out any wb visits, my son doesn't have a ped, etc. So I have worried about the flak. Those are my lines, tho, that I've used in various other situations.

We actually got my son's medicaid sorted out and are going to try out a former hb mw now turned ped just to have someone on paper for us and in case we need somebody, she might be the friendliest. Also putting feelers out for a nd or similar in our area.

Good luck, I hope it goes well and that your little one is better soon. Have you tried squirting breastmilk in his nose?

Thanks for the reply.  The visit went fine.  He didn't really bat an eye about the breastfeeding.  I was nursing when he walked in, and mentioned that he's been refusing water often, but he's nursing a lot so I know he's still decently hydrated.  And he didn't say anything about vaccines, despite me having to mark on like 3 forms what his vaccine history is.  I had planned on just saying "we aren't interested in any shots today"  if they asked.  Also, "maybe later, but not while he's sick" if they pushed it. I think that one will be a good one for me to remember, seeing as how I'm really only going to plan doctor visits when he's sick.  The ped agreed with me that it's likely a cold turned into some kind of bacterial infection.  His ears look clear, but I was suspecting sinuses due to the super goopy eyes he's been having.  He commended me on my wait and see attitude, and said he was more than ready for an antibiotic at this point.  Which is what I thought, and why I decided to go in.  So now we have some Amoxicillan and some probiotics and I'm hoping we can kick this thing before I get really busy with school!
