23 month old not putting two words together yet... normal?

My almost 23-month old ds hasn't begun combining two words together. He has always been a little on the late side with milestones, but has tons of words and comprehension. Just wondering if this is still within the continuum of normal or not.

Ds was much the same. Now at 26 mos he has had a language explosion (quite literally overnight) & is saying multiple word sentences.

My youngest child is 23mos and she does not put two words together either. She really doesn't say very many words at all. I keep waiting for that language explosion but it hasn't happened for her yet.

very normal. combos are usually after they have around 50 words.

That might make you feel better.  You have to wait for them to learn about 50 words and then Bam! Watch out!

Z was the same.  Nothing until right around her 2nd b-day. She still doesn't say much.  She can, she just chooses not to.  Part of Z's thing is the 3 year old sister speaks for her all the time. eyesroll.gif

My 22 month old has three words. That's it. But he understands every single thing I say, and he's a very smart little guy. Just immensely stubborn.

2 words together? he barely says 2 words at all!!! seriously, like pps described, he understands everything exceptionally well (in 2 languages, though a little less in 2nd language) ... im trying not to worry about it, although sometimes its hard. i think ill wait till at least 2.5 to consider professional help.

My 22 month old's vocabulary is maybe 8 words, but he can follow rather complex instructions and understands most of what you say to him.  He plays a game with my ds1 where ds1 will make the sound of a letter and ds2 will repeat it back to him, so I know he can actually say the letter sounds, he's just not making words out them for whatever reason.  2 word combos are quite far off for him.

I have the 24 month ASQ (Ages and Stages Questionnaire) handy, if you'd like to get an idea of where your DC is on the communication section PM me.

Bilingual children take much longer, BTW.  They have to learn and sort at the same time.

Thanks, I feel better. He probably has at least 50 words, and he does this funny babbling thing where he looks super serious and knows exactly what he's trying to say. I just was starting to compare him to other kids his age who are string more words together at once, and it made me a bit nervous.
