Blister on inside of 7 week old's lip?

Has anyone had a baby with a blister on the inside of the lip before? It started out distinctly red but is pretty much the same color as the inside of her lip now. It's been several days and hasn't changed too much - perhaps it's grown some. It's right in the center and near the ... uh... the connecting tissue between the gum and the lips. (I'm sure there's a term that I can't think of. eyesroll.gif)

My MW had a look at it and said she's never seen that before. We have a 2mo check up with her pedi in a couple of weeks but I'm debating calling in before that. It wasn't affecting her nursing, at least initially, but she seems to be sucking much less vigorously now, and popping on and off a lot more than she had been. She doesn't cry or fuss, but I'm wondering if it's causing her pain while nursing.

It seems like it could, maybe, be a canker sore (I've been prone to them at times in my life) but I'm not sure *why.* And, as my MW pointed out, those are definitely painful. The pictures I see of them are also without the blister - just the ulcer. IME I've had blisters that might later become an ulcerated spot, but I also had some as a child that never went away and were surgically removed. shrug.gif

Anyway, I'm not finding much - anywhere - that sounds like this so I'm curious if anyone has experienced it with their own little ones.

My second son developed a "nursing blister" on his lip at one point...not sure if that's the same thing you're talking about it.  It went away on it's own.

I was going to ask if you meant a nursing blister, which Cecilia had. It was on her upper lip, just barely inside and in the middle. It went away on its own. Every now and again when her latch changes some it comes back but only very briefly.

My MW said it was definitely not a nursing blister. shrug.gif

Not sure if this is helpful, but when I was 2yo I got a mouth full of canker sores as a reaction to penicillin.

Wow. I am suspecting some type of food allergy/sensitivity. She's not had anything like meds (nor have I). I did read they can be part of an allergic reaction but it seems strange to have one pop up with relatively mild sensitivities.

What about her latch? Could it be an odd friction spot due to an interesting latch?

It seems rather big to be from friction, but I can't say it's not possible. shrug.gif Here's the best camera phone pic I could get of it. It's on the inside of her bottom lip:

not a friction or nursing blister.  I'd take her to a doctor.  It could be a cyst or an infection, but I can't imagine from what.

Just wanted to update in case anyone else has the same issue at some point...

We have seen our pedi, an ENT, another pedi (not for this, but it's hard to miss!), and a pedi dentist. All agree that it's not a big issue. It's probably a salivary gland, possibly caused by an injury, but perhaps spontaneous, as well. It may get bigger and then smaller and bigger again, or it may go away on its own. In older kids, it's more likely to be messed with and chewed on, causing it to become fibrous and then it would need to be removed. But at this point, we're going to leave it alone and wait to see if it goes away.

Hope that makes sense!
