Article: Want to get your kids into college? Let them play

Found this CNN Opinion article posted by  Life Learning Magazine.

The authors: Erika Christakis, MEd, MPH, is an early childhood teacher and former preschool director. Nicholas Christakis, MD, PhD, is a professor of medicine and sociology at Harvard University. Together, they serve as Masters of Pforzheimer House, one of the undergraduate residential houses at Harvard College.

Want to get your kids into college? Let them play

Excerpt:

"These two kinds of curricula are often pitted against one another as a zero-sum game: If you want to protect your daughter's childhood, so the argument goes, choose a play-based program; but if you want her to get into Harvard, you'd better make sure you're brushing up on the ABC flashcards every night before bed.

We think it is quite the reverse. Or, in any case, if you want your child to succeed in college, the play-based curriculum is the way to go.

In fact, we wonder why play is not encouraged in educational periods later in the developmental life of young people -- giving kids more practice as they get closer to the ages of our students."

I love this article Lillian and saw it on facebook. Sometimes we all need a little perspective. I know this is especially true for me.

I was looking at Life Learning magazine after you recommended it this weekend and was a wee bit disappointed it was just digital, but I think I may have to subscribe after all and get over it. I like the environmental aspect of it, but somehow I have a harder time reading magazine format online.

Oh! Darn. I didn't realize Life Learning had gone all digital - I guess it that was what they needed to do to survive in these hard times. I think you'll find a lot to enjoy in it, though. And having Home Education Magazine coming into your home will be wonderful.  ; )      Lillian

Lillian - a bit OT, but have you seen/read the Life Learning book?

And it looks like they have some other books also that I'm curious about:

I wasn't aware of that book, but I have no doubt that it's an excellent one if it's "essays from the last six years of Life Learning magazine.

As for the other books, What Really Matters is one of my all time favorite books about homeschooling!!! love.gif
