Honestly, I'd just let Dh deal with it.  Its his family.  If you were to get involved in any way, even by sending a postcard or a short phone call, you'll be sucked into the drama again.

Don't feed the fire.Dh can check in with them. Atleast it is letters,and not someone showing up at the door! You could send out a letter 2 times a year like a christmas letter that details general stuff....or not.
