Is this thrush AGAIN?

Thread Starter

We both had thrush over Thanksgiving.... went to pedi, got fluconazole for DD, and pedi recommended I use Lotramin AF for my nipples. I've cleaned her toys several times a week with Seventh Generation wipes, and boiled the ones that can be boiled.. we don't use bottles so I dont need to clean any of those...

Her mouth appears totally back to normal, no white patches.

I admit, during the time I was supposed to apply Lotramin, I constantly forgot. She said to apply it after each feeding, I might have done it once a day. But my nipples did get better for a while. So I assumed it was working.

Today my nipples are blotchy red, and I can't tell if its thrush again, or just nipple trauma. Whenever my nipples get cracked up, I almost NEVER apply nipple ointment (like Lansinoh) like I should.. so I can't tell if its thrush, or if its my usual mistreatment of my tata's, lol. How can I tell the difference? Should I just treat it as if its thrush, since we had thrush recently? Is it possible for me to just have it and not her?? I would hate to have to do her treatment all over again, go back to pedi, etc etc.

What should I do?

Oh, also... if I need to treat my nipples for thrush, I am wondering about vinegar, does regular white vinegar work?

Have you read about grapefruit seed extract? Ds2 had thrush for a few weeks, and it was gone 2 or 3 days after I wiped his mouth with gfse a few times.

I think you can get it at most hfs. Good luck. :)

I would treat as if it were thrush.  I'm suprised that your DD got fluconazole and you didn't.  Ideally, you should both have taken a course in case your thrush was systemic and in the ducts (I know this is controversial, but I believe thrush does get into the ducts.).

If you want to try a more natural route, ITA with pp would suggested grapefruit seed extract.  You can take it internally and apply it to your nips. You can also take probiotics.  They will help crowd-out the yeast.  LO can also take probiotics, which will help prevent re-infection for her.  You should also avoid all products made with sugar or white flour because that is what yeast feeds on.

Yes, vinegar works!  And it is super cheap.

Here's what I did (as we have weaned).

1. After every nursing session, dip your boobs in cups of vinegar.  Seriously.  Put two half-full bowls of vinegar on the counter and dip your boobs.  Swab under your boobs, armpits, anywhere baby touches.  Air dry.  Keep nipples ventilated if possible.

2. Wash EVERYTHING with vinegar.  Wipe down toys with it.  Any surfaces you touch. Put some in your downy ball and put it in your wash EVERY cycle.  I still do this, even though DD is not nursing.

3. GSE and probiotics orally, also for DD if you are comfortable with it.  Stay away from sugar and yeast.

Good luck!!

Coconut oil helps topically, the caprylic acid kills candida albicans. However, you need to strengthen your immune system to avoid the recurrence. I'd add whole food probiotics to your diet.

grapefruit seed extract, and probiotics!! after 2 months the thing that is finally helping is Yeast Cleanse by Solar Ray- has GFSE and Caprylic acid and pau d'arco and more. Thank heavens!!!  consider the candida diet too- starve it out...
