Since he can do it when you ask I wouldn't worry at all.

My ds started being able to draw circles pretty early on (2yo), and at 3 can draw a "person" if I prompt him - ie. he'll draw a circle and then I'll say "oh, looks like he needs eyes" and he'll draw the eyes, etc, etc.

I don't remember exactly when dd started drawing more recognizable things (people) but I think it was maybe a bit later - 3.5???

I think a lot of it is interest, and there is an element of fine-motor development. Since your ds can do it upon request I don't think there's a fine-motor delay. From your description of his response ("leave me alone"... lol) sounds like he's just not interested in drawing circles, lines or faces at the moment.
