removing sticky residue from contact paper on shelf

I removed some contact paper from a shelf in my bathroom.  I plan to repaint the shelf at some point, but I can't do it right now, and I just need to get the stuff put back in the cabinet for now.  I kept all the towels, toothpaste, all the bathroom stuff in there, and right now it is stacked all over my kitchen table.

Despite peeling and scraping, there is still just some sticky residue on the shelf, it kind of balls up, like when you peel a label off of a glass jar.  Any ideas for how to get the remainder of it off so I can get my bathroom back to a slightly less state of chaos??

TIA!!

I like Goop Off, which is almost entirely made of orange oil. If you don't want to buy anything, you can use almost any oil to get the sticky stuff up, then use dish detergent to get the oil off. Hope this helps. smile.gif
