Avocado Baby Food

Baby DS has hated pretty much all solids, except a few which aren't your normal baby foods.  He's still young enough that we are just going with it and experimenting a lot.  He is nursing A LOT these days and waking up more at night again.  Big boy, big appetite.

However, we found out this weekend that he LOVES avocado.  Pretty much whined because DH couldn't feed it fast enough.

What can I do to make it into a baby food and freeze it?  Avocado is expensive this time of year around here, and it keeps poorly.  Should I add anything to it to help it not brown so much and then freeze it, or just stick it in the freezer after mashing with no additives.

Any input would be great!  Thanks!

avocado IS baby food, in my mind, no need to do anything to it. we have it every few days. i agree it is expensive, so what i do is cut it in half, rub one side in lemon juice and wrap tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge. the other half she typically eats in one sitting, or we share it, or i offer it at lunch and dinner. the wrapped half will last at least a day, maybe two. so we eat a lot of avocado for 2 days, then not at all for a few. if the unused half starts going brown, you can always just slice the browned part off and serve the rest. it's not gone bad, it just oxidizes. however, we very rarely have an issue with avocado sitting around, since i love it too. i really don't think it would deal well with freezing.

Mashed/pureed avocado should freeze ok, but cut avocado won't thaw too well.

Breastmilk keeps avocado from browning.  When I freeze cubes of it for daycare, I mix in some BM.  It is a tiny bit brown when thawing but does ok and baby doesn't mind :)

We do what Silverfish does, eat it for a couple days then don't for a couple days. IMO it would be better to eat it fresh than eat it from a frozen puree. One trick that I learned somewhere, ah Martha Stewart?, is that if you want to save one half of the avacado leave the pit in that half, it's suppose to lessen the oxidation or browning. I just put the other half with the pit in it in a container and in the fridge. If there is browning I just scrape it off.

Not sure what avacados are going for in your area but here in northern WI at my heath food store organic avacados are 1.39 and at the grocery store they're 0.69. I don't think that's too much for a good for you veg/fruit (whatever it is). AND It's great that your little one likes it bc it is SO good for little ones, great fats. My older dd won't touch avacado with a 10ft pole.

Thanks for all the replies!

That's what we did with it this time around... we shared it and saved it in the fridge over 2 days.  DH lived in Mexico for a summer, so he knows about the pit in the saved half trick.

I guess I was hoping for a way to make a batch of mashed avocado and freeze it (like I do with potatoes and yams).  I may experiment with a couple frozen cubes next time I buy one - just to see what happens, with a little breastmilk or even a touch of baby juice.  If its gross, or doesn't work, then we'll stick to just eating it occasionally.  I just could not believe how much DS loved it... its the only thing (besides a cookie which he shouldn't have) that he has really, really wanted more of - excitedly!  And it made me happy, because I really think sometimes he might be kind of hungry - especially in the evening when my milk is at its lowest.  (I've been trying to drink more water to keep up with him!)

northerngirl - Avocado at our local grocery store are $2.00 EACH.  The organic ones run about the same price.  If they were only 69 cents, I don't think I'd care so much!  Then sometimes you buy one that's not great... and that stinks too.  (I'm in Western New York)

WOW! $2! Yeah that is a lot. Look for when they go on sale I guess. Or just get a couple a week? It's no fun when you're at the store checking on the firmness of avacados and your finger goes through, whoops. Done that before. :)

WOW!  I have a baby girl born 6/24/10 and she hates food too :)  Can't believe they have same birthday.  We are really struggling.  My even keeled happy baby will slam her mouth shut when I offer her anything other than breastmilk.  Today I even put a little pile of real rice on her tray and she tried and then locked her mouth shut.  Oh well.  One of these days she will figure it out I guess.  Will try avacado tomorrow.  Do you have a BJs?  Their fruit is really economical.  Trader Joes too if you have one.

At 9 months, my Cecilia is still barely eating enough to see anything in her poo. It comes with time, I wouldn't worry. smile.gif

Have you tried mixing it with a bit of yogurt? That might be freezable. But see if your LO likes it that way before making a big batch. My ds went crazy over it at first, but then changed his mind.
