I go back and forth between having one. I do have a home for 99% of the stuff in our house so ideally everything would get put back in its place ASAP, but it doesn't. So I throw stuff in a junk drawer and then deal with it when I have time (or when the drawer gets full). But then I think I could be using that drawer for something more useful (what, I don't know) so I convert it for a couple of weeks, our junk ends up all over the counters, and then I set up a junk drawer again. I guess that means it's a necessary evil for us. What about you?

Yes, I have two in the kitchen. One hold office-y things like stamps, tape, scissors and etc. The other is supposed to hold the cell phone chargers, batteries, matches and the like. I do have to muck out both drawers a couple of times a year. My teens think if you stick anything in one of those drawers... it counts as "cleaning up". Insert big sigh.

We have a couple of them in our dining room. My dh isn't as interested in decluttering as I am and the catchall/junk drawers allow me to put his stuff out of sight when people come over. Dh is also always in a hurry and he gets upset if he has to look for things, so he likes just throwing all the things he might be using in a given time frame together and then sorting through them to find stuff. To me, it doesn't seem a more effective system than having a place for everything, but it works best for him. He tried to organize things my way, but couldn't ever remember where things are.
Â
I cleaned out one of the junk drawers recently, but I didn't know what to put in it. So I offered it to dh, thinking that he might be able to use it for some stuff that is packed into one of his dresser drawers, but he decided that it was more useful to him as a... junk drawer.
I think that in some houses, junk drawers are inevitable.
Â
I kinda wish we did.. there are only 2 drawers in the kitchen so one is for silverware and the other is for knives and other utensils like kitchen scissors.
Â
So all of our miscellaneous stuff/junk ends up on the upper counter- I think its called a pony wall? Anyway.. I am going to put a container there to catch it all. It seems inevitable things will get put there until I have time to find homes for them.
