knitting question.

Hello, 

I am knitting this http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns/christmas/1945-stocking.htm(xmas stocking). I did this same pattern several years ago and remember questioning myself when it came to doing the name. I just knit the name am weaving in what seems like 100 loose ends and find myself questioning again. So, my question is if Intarsia is the best way to knit the name in this pattern?  Each letter is 10 rows of stitches in height and the width varies depending on the letter. Is there a better way? 

I have heard of fair isle but have no idea how to do it. 

Can someone ease my mind? Or tell me I am doing this all wrong and before I go any further I can stop and do it the "right" way.

How about doing the name in duplicate stitch?
