Congested cough and high fever in 2 year old

We had relatives visit us from Scandinavia over Christmas/New years (with 2 kids the same ages as ours). DS came down with cold like Symptoms on Dec 26th, and since then he's had a congested cough and twice a high fever. I didn't measure the fever the first time but he was very hot to the touch, two nights later he had another high fever that I did measure 103.64. He had some croup like breathing last week (but it cleared up with in a couple of days (maybe after the first high fever?)). The thing is, he is still coughing (always twice a long cough followed by a shot one) and has clear to light, light green snot out his nose. And the coughing is worse at night, waking him at least 3 times. During the day he's active (i can't keep him "calm" or low key!) driving his cars around and his appetite/water is good.

I scoured the net and didn't find any symptoms that match his so ( I looked up bronchitis and phenomena among others)... it's probably just a virus, right? In such a case supporting the immune system and waiting it out are the best options?

I should add that my husband is experiencing almost the same symptoms, though he doesn't wake up in the nights coughing and crying.

Any one else experiencing this with there DC?

Thanks!

Coughs can linger, most of the time our lingering coughs go away without me doing much special stuff.

I've had good experiences using a technique my DO taught me to help loosen up the ick in congested coughs, it's a lifting technique.

You lift the child (or adult, she's done it to me) by holding at the level of their lowest rib, just lift them so the weight of their body is pulling down.  Put them down, move your hands up one rib, and repeat, and keep going til you get to their armpits and you can't go higher.  It's just a gentle lift up put down and repeat, but the kids and I all cough more and a lot more productively for the next few hours, but then the coughing is easier and it helps us heal.  When I remember, I do it every day we've got a cough (obviously not right before bedtime because the coughing intensifies for a few hours first).

Thank you for you're reply!

I'll try the lift tomorrow and see if it helps get the mucus out. This is the first time one of my kids has had a high fever and coughing for longer than a couple days. I appreciate words of wisdom from mammas with experience!
