EBF- 6 week old allergic to Dairy and Soy possibly... what to eat?

I posted another post over in breastfeeding challenges, but I thought this might be better here.

I am pretty sure DD has a dairy allergy ("colic" stopped when I stopped most dairy), and now I think she may also have a soy allergy ("Colic" restarted when I upped the soy intake along with mucusy poos.) The NP at our pediatricians talked with me on the phone and thinks she is allergic to both dairy and soy.

What do I eat now? I still would like my morning coffee (I did give up caffeine briefly but it didn't do anything with her), but what do I put in it for creamer? Can't use silk soy or non-dairy because it has casein. I plan on eating oatmeal, rice, quinoa, whole wheat bread and tortillas, polenta, etc., rice milk or almond milk, beans / hummus, lots of veggies and fruits, free range organic meats and eggs. Do you know of anything else I can eat if I am craving snacks? I found these kettle bbq chips that don't have any soy or dairy...

I am nervous she could also be sensitive to gluten. My aunt has celiac disease and we all have autoimmune hypothyroidism and I've suspected for a long time that I could have food sensitivites that are contributing to my own health issues (lots of fatigue / low iron, b-12, d3, etc.)

My mom told me she had to eat a very plain diet when she breastfed me, so it seems my DD may take after me. I think this new diet could be good for me, too... maybe I will also feel better eating this way.

Any advice / recipe ideas / coping ideas are welcome. I am going to miss pizza, starbuck's, and chocolate the most!

Your list of foods that you plan to eat looks good. For snacks, here are a few ideas:

-Popcorn with various toppings. We do Earth Balance and sea salt, or flax oil with nutritional yeast and lemon pepper.

-Quesadillas made with Daiya "cheese"

-Rice cake with almond butter or peanut butter

-Dried apple chips

-Homemade baked goods without any of your suspect foods. You should be able to use almond, hemp, or coconut milk in place of dairy milk in just about any recipe.

-Tortilla chips and salsa or hummus

Since you suspect more allergies/sensitivities in yourself and your DD, it would probably be helpful to start keeping a food journal and tracking any symptoms as well. That way you'll have some good data that you can use to look for patterns.

Good luck!

Thank you! Does Earth Balance have soybean oil? I think the organic smart balance I have has it. Sounds like I will be learning to cook a lot more. What do you use to add flavor to grains and stuff? I was using soy sauce ;( and marinating chicken in some organic dressing (made with soybean oil!) I can eat healthy foods if they have flavor. I don't even know where to begin... I do have olive oil and vinegar and a cupboard full of organic spices...

We had a ton of intolerances.

So Delicious coconut creamer, milk, ice cream, yogurt...they are all AMAZING!!!

eat more extra virgin olive oil so yo get enough fat and calories, just add it on everything!

I love earth's balance soy free spread as well.

avacados are great for good fats too.

try and eat high protein. If you are worried about other intolerances, I would avoid nuts, eggs, and beef right now and see how it goes.

We use the soy-free version of Earth Balance. It's yummy. eat.gif

You can use coconut aminos or chickpea miso in place of soy sauce. I just found both at my local Whole Foods (the miso was refrigerated and the coconut aminos were by all the raw foods). Other things I use to add flavor are onions and garlic, spices, and oils. Maybe you could find some good cookbooks at your library. The vegetarian ones would probably be helpful in terms of learning how to create flavorful dishes without relying on dairy (although most do have recipes with soy in them). I love Robin Robertson's cookbooks, and she has plenty of recipes with no dairy or soy. You could probably also find lots of recipes online, on websites or blogs.

my blog is back up (if you go to my profile, it's listed there until I can figure out how to change my signature), and several moms on here have blogs with recipes that are dairy and soy free. We use the So Delicious creamers, or you can use the almond milk in your coffee as well.  I've never drank coffee, so I went to flavored teas instead.

The other suggestions are good. Enjoy Life chocolate chips will be safe for you (so you don't have to give up chocolate!) and cocoa doesn't have dairy or soy in it, so you can make brownies and things like that. Not sure where you live, but around here there's 2 potato chips that are safe for us. And corn chips (fritos and Tostitos naturals) but be aware that corn is one of the top 4 food intolerances, so if you increase your intake of that and you get more symptoms, take heed. The food journal is a very good idea, down to ingredient level, and all symptoms (sleep, bowel habits, mood, colic, rashes, etc.).

Look at meats and everything else. I make coconut milk yogurt to use as a base for salad dressing, dips, use in baking, cream of mushroom soup, etc.  Personally I think the Rice Vegan cheddar cheese is good for macaroni & cheese (though others on this forum don't agree) and my kids like the mozzarella version on their pizza. Also in the resources up at the top of the page (if it's still there in the new format... I haven't looked) there were links to recipes threads.
