Stuffing a knitted toy

I am just finishing this cute, easy pattern http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/50722.html?r=1, it's bunny toy/teether.  I used Lion Nature's Choice Organic Cotton, what a lovely yarn to knit with.  What should I stuff the head with?  I want it to be machine washable, so does that leave only polyfil as an option?  I have tons of wool, but it'll just felt if it's put in the machine.  How about real cotton balls?  Will they totally bunch up if it's machine washed?

Dh suggested tightly packed wool, like a Waldorf doll head.  Any thoughts?

Are you on Ravelry?  You can see it there, too:  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bunny-blanket-buddy---knit  It's basically a cotton washcloth with a stuffed head.  The pattern is pretty cool, you knit the entire thing, including the head, on straights, with no seaming.  The head is worked in purl, slip all the way across right side and wrong side, and at the end, you have a hollow tube.  I know I've used that technique before, but it's been awhile, and it was a surprise again how it turned out.

What about stuffing it with the same  yarn that you made it with?  That way it would all be organic cotton softness and completely  machine washable.

Thank you!  For some reason, that didn't occur to me.  I just stuffed it.  It's a boucle yarn, so it bunched up nicely.  I want to get some more of that yarn to make more of these.  They're so quick and cute.

Oh my, that is so cute! Wool stuffing would felt inside when you washed it and would be fine as long as it is large enough in diameter so that it would stay out of the choke gauge and wouldn't present a hazard. I think poly fiberfill would migrate out of the thing from between the knitted stitches. You would have to encapsulate the stuffing in a small bag or lining of tightly woven percale to prevent this. I think wool batting or the yarn as someone suggested, is your best bet.

I would love to see a pic of your finished product!

Aw, thanks!  It was super easy, and with a 40% off coupon at Michael's, really inexpensive.
