Scandinavian Moms - Question about bedding

This is just a silly question about bedding, if you don't mind. My boss (who is married to a Norwegian man) and I (who lived with a Danish family for a few weeks in high school on an exchange program) were just talking about bedding in Scandinavia, and started talking about the way the families we've stayed with fold their comforters lengthwise during the day and place them in the center of the bed, rather than spreading them out over the bed as we're accustomed to here in the US. Is there a reason for folding the comforter this way, other than just tradition? We were kind of imagining it might have something to do with airing out the mattress or something, but maybe someone here knows the reason?

Style and aeration?

Anyway, my mom is Scandinavian, so I'm interested to see the replies...

They do it in Austria too.  It's mostly for aeration.  People sweat anywhere between 20mL and 2L per hour when they sleep.  Folding and laying it lengthwise in the bed seems to be cultural.  I was taught to fold it width-wise and lay it at the end of my bed.

I am Swiss and we always folded them widthwise growing up, lol.

We did the width wide folding in Russia as well.

My German host family folded theirs width-wise, but my Finnish husband's family lays them out lengthwise on the bed.

 How interesting! I only lived in Russia for a year, but we tucked the comforters away for the day in the armoire.

LOL honestly, in our apartment there was only 1 bed that wasn't used as a couch during the day, so on it the bedding stayed widthwide. On all other beds, the bedding was picked up and put away in the armoire and the couches put together for the day. There really wasn't much room to have separate sleeping areas.
