Updated IEP

I posted last year about wanting my son re evaluated for his IEP & was told they would do it at the 3 year mark. I went for the meeting this past Monday, January 10th. He is most definitely autistic and has ADD/ADHD. His previous impairment was listed as speech and language delay. They also mentioned him having issues sensory wise, but didn't say anything about SPD. I was told if I want help with OT or PT to help with the sensory issues I'd have to take him elsewhere because they don't have either on staff. Another district close by could evaluate him but they probably wouldn't work with him. Don't they HAVE to try to do something if they don't have the resources themselves besides referring us to an outside source?

I'm sorry that you're not getting the therapy your son needs, and the school district is not following what they are required to do under

"Free and Appropriate Public Education" (FAPE).   FAPE is a basic right for all students, and them not having the therapists on staff should not be a factor.  It is there job to find them or pay out of district for your son to receive the services he needs!

You will be your son's best advocate, and you need to research, developelop a support system to help you through the process.  I found a group that has trained and experienced advocates; they have been my biggest ally.  They have given me the tools and are a great support/comfort through the IEP process.

Please let me know if i can help in any way.

Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) - FAQs, Articles, Tips ...

They seem to be doing everything possible to avoid their legal responsibilities. It looks like you could use and advocate; try searching "IEP advocate yourcity".

The only thing the school told me was that there is a place I can take him to down the street from us, and that if I have any problems getting him in soon to let them know and they will help with that. My son has medicaid since he gets SSI so I know it would be covered cost wise, but it seemed like their attitude was off cause they don't have the sources themselves so it is getting pushed onto me

Have you tried to contact this site?

You really need an advocate to help you be your child's advocate.  They are trying to get out of their responsibility.  He needs to be in the school system, so he can get the skills needed prior to preschool or kindergarten.  Our daughter goes to private therapy by our insurance and we are in the process of fighting for more school therapy.  "Educational VS Life skills"

My son is 7 1/2 years old and is in 2nd grade. I called the center that was mentioned today and they can get him in the 24th of this month. I am going to see how things go with that. They may end up being a lot more help then the school will end up being.
