The cat repellent we have stinks pretty bad so you might not be able to handle the smell in labor.

I've never tried it but my sister swears by Felaway.  I think you plug it in and it releases pheremones that calm your cat?

This thread has me thinking too...mostly about an unattended pool and a cat drowning!  I don't think my cats would go near it but you never know.  I think they will be under a bed though...that's what they usually do when people come over.

I've actually used feliway. It stinks in this chemically way when you spray it, but when it's dry it does not smell at all. I'm not sure if you can spray it on plastic, but it would be easy to find out.

I still vote trough, chewing on that won't do it any harm and it would probably fit in your apt better. You know what might be a good idea if you don't mind spending a little cash, see if you can get a used fishy pool from craigslist or here on MDC, and then set it up without water in your apartment. Leave it there for a few days, get inside of it with dh when the cat is in the room and just see what he does. A used one couldn't be very much considering new it's 30$. Well worth the price for peace of mind, no.

I've used the Feliway that plugs into the wall, which doesn't stink (in my opinion).  I don't remember being able to smell it at all.  I haven't seen the spray.

That said, I couldn't tell if it was working on my cat.  Maybe I'll get a refill, just in case it works.  ;)

I like the idea of the trough, but frankly I don't want the responsibility of finding it a home after the birth.  I think the convenience of having the pool go away, back to the doula I'm renting it from, beats trying to find someone who wants the trough and getting it to them (I have no car, storage space is v. limited for most New Yorkers, etc.).  Call me lazy, but I'd rather spend the money on a rental than buy a big piece of plastic I have to house and then get rid of.
