Is there such a thing as TOO firm a doll head?

I am having the same problem as the poster in this thread:

http://www.mothering.com/community/forum/thread/800963/shape-of-doll-head

My husband even helped me and we tried multiple methods to get the thread really tight. Tried Joy's suggested method of putting your knee down. Nope. Tried a method where my husband pulled it extra tight with twine first without tying it off and then I immediately followed in with my thread and tied the indent off.

So I slip the fabric over it and the indents disappear. Like almost entirely not noticeable disappear. What the hay?

What technique do you use to get the string tight enough?

To get a firm head, I used the technique that EVLowi described in this thread, but maybe I took it too far.

The head I did feels as firm as the doll heads of the Waldorf dolls sold at a local store.

Thank you!

P.S. I'm due with another baby in less than 2 weeks and have it in my head that the baby won't come until this project is done. Therefore, would love advice soon because I want to meet this baby...SOON ;) . Plus, I really want this doll to be the "new baby gift" for my daughter and give it to her when she visits at the hospital.

lol! Glad I checked in this morning!

I don't believe you can roll the head too hard. Here are a few tips to getting a good eye line indent-

#1- Wear gloves when you tie the heads. I have even used athletic foam sticky tape on my fingers where the string line cuts into my hands.

#2- At the point where you are finished rolling the ball and ready to cover with the wool batt sheet that becomes the neck, make sure you have a thick enough piece of it.

#3- When you are doing the head covering- before you tie off the neck for the last time but after you have secured top and bottom of the skin covering knit, pull a small bit of knit up to the top of the head and don't pull your skin knit too tight while you are fitting it.

HTH and best wishes for  ELV and on your doll.

thanks for your quick reply! i'm trying to get myself in baby having ready status in time for the full moon on Wednesday ;) .

i took the head to my local waldorf store and the lady helped me. so even though i was given a floss like material to use when doing this, they recommended something else. maybe i wasn't supposed to use the floss for this step. they said crafter's thread and since i didn't have anything else in my weir kit, i assumed that was it.

as to your point number 2, i think you're onto something. it probably should have been thicker, but i was worried my head was getting to big as it was. i barely got the doll head skin over!

as to point number 3, maybe it's because i'm not that far yet, but that doesn't make sense to me. as in not that it's a bad idea, but more that i don't know what you're referring to. i will keep it in mind as i keep reading through the instructions.

P.S. So far I'm not a fan of Joy's pattern.
