Who "invented" patterned breathing for labor?

I'm having trouble locating this information. Who first took note and started propagating patterned breathing to help cope with labor? I think it was Lamaze, but I am not sure. Does anyone know?

I think you're right, it was Frederick Lamaze who brought it to the western world.  But I think he got it from some people in...Russia? at the time, this 'psychoprophylactic method'.
