audiobook / audible advice

We had some Audible credits to use up from a Woot purchase and got a bit spoiled, being able to download exactly the book we want from Audible ...

DS asked me to download Breaking Dawn today, and I did get it free (again) with a 30-day membership trial (and calendared a day to review whether to keep the membership, which I think is $15 a month for one audiobook credit per month) but now I need some advice.

Is an Audible membership a good deal compared to what else is out there?

One thing that concerns me is that a lot of the books we like are rather long, and require more than one credit.  Normally I flat out wouldn't buy a $30 audiobook.  We have a large audiobook collection on CD, mostly buying up stuff from Amazon when it is a couple of years post-release and discounted.

Have you tried searching your public libraries for audiobooks?

Dang, look at that.  You can download them free from my library system and I guess they expire in a couple of weeks.

I don't know how old your child is, but we like storynory.com (not books per se, but great stories) & librivox is good too, with a large collection.  both are free.

Yup, my DS loves these, too. I'm guessing that if he wants Breaking Dawn, and you're willing to let him listen to it, he's probably a bit old for storynory, though. LibriVox is more all-ages.
