Clomid or Femara and Birth defects?

My husband and I have been trying for awhile to have a baby naturally.  We've done pretty much everything I can think of and it's not working. I have a cycle's worth of Clomid at home but I'm afraid to take it because I'm worried about birth defects.  Do you think this is something I should worry about?

Clomid has been used for a long time to stimulate ovulation.  It's a safe and easy first line in infertility treatment.

I wouldn't worry about birth defects, I don't believe there is any link between Clomid and any kind of birth defect.

I've taken Clomid for two of my pregnancies. Never once did the OB that prescribed it or the MFM doctors I saw mention Clomid related birth defects.

My OB did tell me though that infertile couples may be predisposed to having children with genetic abnormalities. I can't remember how exactly she worded it, but it was like mother nature's way of allowing the healthiest offspring to be produced. Does that make sense?

ETA: By infertile I mean those that are truly infertile, not those that suffer from such problems as a LP defect or other minor reproductive problems.

Thanks so much for letting me know.  How many cycles did it take to work for you?

With DD2 I used Clomid for only one cycle and it was 50 mg. With DD3 I used it for several cycles and it was 50 mg in the beginning. We went to 100 mg. And finally ended up going to 150 mg. Keep in mind though I was lazy about trying and we had to be creative in scheduling since I was living in Tennessee and DH was still active duty in Maryland. I think the stress of it all added to it. We were also trying to sway for a boy and swaying hurts your chances of conception as well. But on the last cycle when we just finally said we'll take whatever we get I conceived our beautiful little girl.

I used Femara to conceive my 7 year old son.  I wouldn't worry about birth defects.  Also, any studies done on them were for women who took these drugs while being pregnant, which you wouldn't do if TTC....

HI!  I just came across your post.  I am considering Chlomid and have your same prior concerns re: birth defects.  Did you try Chlomid, and if so, how long did it take to conceive?   Thank you so much!

I have never heard anything about Clomid being linked to birth defects.
