I have a big (27 pound), very active 10 m.o. After not having used my Maya wrap for months since it hurt my back (I know how to use it correctly, it's just that he's quite heavy), I have started using it again because my back hurts so much from trying to carry him the regular way. I guess it's just trading one variety of backache for another. Anyway, he is able to use his little feet to propel himself out of it by kind of climbing up my side. Any ideas? I would love an Ergo but can't afford another wrap (I will try to trade on MDC's Marketplace when I have been a member long enough).

Ahh momma... *hugs* of understanding.. a good hard hug to re-align both of our spines.. :P Â
Â
My DS is 24 pounds and 8 months.. I switched out of my ring sling when he hit 16 pounds at 4 months... and am now in the aforementioned goddess of a carrier, the Ergo. BUT between the two, there was a solution that might work for you until you land yourself an Ergo (which still proves to be a backache of a situation sometimes, but I'm hoping that starting to back carry soon will alleviate some of that). Â I had a jersey material baby wrap.. the kind that's one huge long piece of semi-stretch material that you can tie around you & the babe (two-shoulder carry for any weighty babe) in a way that there's no getting out. Almost guaranteed. I did the tie that's around & over each shoulder, crossing in the back and front, with additional wrapping around the babe to secure them to you and then another wrap around the waist to tie in the back. I hope that makes a bit of sense.Â
Â
The evenly distributed two-shoulder-ness of it all worked wonders.. and I'd still have him in it today sometimes if it weren't completely frigid (I'd lose my fingers to this chill before I ever got it tied and him into it). I bought mine off of a fantastic woman on Etsy who pretty much has this kind of carrier monopolied there... it was around 40, and is organic, they're a bit cheaper if you don't care about that. They come with an instructional DVD to for lots of diff. carries.. (but I cheated and just youtubed for exactly what I needed.. I think I searched heavy baby wrap carry).Â
Â
To fully address the climbing issue again, I think that this front or back carry style will cure you of this dangerous evil that is the daredevil child.. it straps them in as securely and as tight as you can haul on that fabric.. and they're pretty wide, giving great coverage from bum to upper shoulder/neck with your last wrap around (on the babe).Â
Â
Ok. I've written a novella here.. but hopefully this helps a bit.Â

Hey GingerNinja (what a cool handle)--your reply was very helpful in that DH and I realized I did NOT know how to properly use the Maya for a big fella. We went to youtube and typed in Maya wrap for toddler (or something like that) and watched a short video someone had posted which showed the method you recommended. I was doing it so wrong--just dropping him into it standing up, so that his feet were at the bottom. With your input & the video I watched, baby and I took a short walk today in a properly-configured Maya wrap. Big thanks for your input!
