Any teachers that pump out there?

I will be going back to work next year when baby is 3 months old. I pumped with both my children but I wasn't a teacher then. DS was 6 months old when I went back to work and DD was at the daycare I worked at. I could nurse her on my two breaks.

I have a few concerns this time around that I am wondering about. I have my lunch break at 11:25 and planning time at 12:30 (if it stays the same). Twice a week my planning time is used for PLC meetings. I do have an assistant if I need to leave the room but I don't know how appropriate that is to leave her to go pump. My team is very supportive of pumping at work but I also don't want to leave them with extra work because I am pumping. So my questions are:

How often will I have to pump at work for a 3 month old?

If you pumped during planning what do you do about PLC?

What do you do when specials get canceled and you don't have your planning time? (this happens a lot and sometimes when my assistant has other duties and can't help me out).

What did you do when you had meetings or parent nights where you don't get home until late?

At 10:00 most of my students go to bilingual and I only have around 7 students left. Would this be an appropriate time to pump and leave instructions with my assistant? I am technically on the clock at that time. I know my team wouldn't mind but I don't know...

Let me know if there is another place that would be better to post this question. Thanks.

I taught elem. school when my oldest was 6 months old. This is what I did....

We were contracted at 8 am, but school didn't start till 9 am. So, I pumped as soon as I got to work. I would get to work a bit early, if you have to, to get a pump in before school starts.

Here was my schedule....

6:30 wake up baby to nurse, get him dressed

7:00 leave with baby for work

7:45 arrive at daycare...spend a few minutes with him.

8:00 arrive at work and pump immediately. This is when I got my biggest yield of milk. I had a PIS double and I got 10 oz in about 10 minutes. I had a little "station" set up in a closet to pump at that gave a little privacy if someone walked in to my classroom accidentally.

10:30- recess break. I worked it out with the principal that I would do my recess duty before school always. Most people hated that duty, so it wasn't an inconvenience on anyone else. I would pump for a quick 5 min....about 5 oz of milk.

1145-1230- was my lunch. I would pump the last 15 min. and get  8 oz.

3:00 school over, but still my contract time. Would pump 10 min and get around 5 oz.

4:00 pick up baby...sometimes nurse him, sometimes not. Depended on when his last bottle was.

Good luck!

Oh, forgot...parent meetings...I scheduled them first thing in the am or the hour after school ended. On back to school nights and school events, I was very lucky and my DCP lived down the street from the school. She would come, and bring babe to me to nurse, and then take him back, if needed. Or I had my dh meet me at work and he watched babe after I nursed him.

I didn't pump during planning meetings. But...we had staff meetings at 8 am every other Monday. I got to work earlier on those days to pump before 8 am.

I forgot about recess. I have morning recess that I can have my assistant cover. I'll see if DH can bring baby to me at work for those late nights. Thanks for the tips!
