keeping in touch while traveling internationally

Thread Starter

So I'm tagging along on my dh's business trip to Australia in March (yay!).  We would like to have some way to get ahold of each other if we get separated.  So of course there's the whole international cell phone mess.... which we're rather not get into.  And we're not that attached to cell phones anyway.  So then I think I could get some of those fancy new walkie talkies.... but the spectrum licensing is of course, by country.  So then we were thinking maybe we could get prepaid phones when we get there?  But what if we don't need them?

Anyway... I can't imagine I'm the first person to have had this problem and was hoping I could get some advice or btdts.  Thanks!

I think the prepaid would be a good idea at a time like this. You buy just a bit of minutes and if you find yourself using them, reload. Not sure what band is used over there, but you can even get/bring a phone from here that in unlocked and pop an aussie prepaid sim card in. might want to post this on the find your tribe section for australia

We just spent Christmas in Australia. Prepaid phones are not widely available in Australia; I'd recommend bringing your phones & each buying a $5/$10 prepaid SIM (whatever is the lowest amount) so that you can stay in touch.

prepaid phones are available in Australia quite easily and much more cheaply than in the US. If your US phone is unlocked, uses a SIM card , and is tri band (regular US phones don't work in Aus) just bring it with you and buy a prepaid sim card at any store. The main brands are Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin mobile. Vodafone and virgin are the cheapest.
