Need Advice: When to buy AI2 One-Size Dipes

DH & I intend to CD (I'm 29 weeks currently), but possibly not until the cord falls off.  After that, the current plan is that I try the different dipes I have (see stash below), and then I'll order more of what I like (or have someone pick it up for me at a local CD store).  This plan was made to prevent me from buying tons of dipes that don't 'work' for us, though I'm growing nervous about not having enough diapers on hand in the beginning, and then potentially getting into a disposable rut.

I've done a ton of research and have decided I'd like to try AI2 dipes as my preferred CD method.  I have bought one flip cover & stay-dry insert, two softbums covers & 7 stay-dry inserts (w/ 2 newborn inserts), and 1 bumgenius 4.0.  I also snagged 4 small used fuzzibuns off craigslist.

DH doesn't want me to buy any more until I've tried the ones I have on our newborn.  I'm pretty confident I'll like the softbums & flip based on all my reading, but I also recognize the wisdom & experience of others in not buying full systems pre-baby.  I also hope to use softbums immediately after the cord falls off, since they're pretty dang small, and if I bought the flip newborn inserts, those might work if I had a bigger baby, but who knows...

Any advice if my plan sounds feasible or if I should get a few more of each to make a valid assessment or get by in the beginning?

For the most part, I have found that the majority of one-size diapers don't start fitting well until the baby is around 10lbs.  So for some babies that could be at just a few weeks old, for others it could be a few months old.  It's definitely trial and error, as they are all cut/designed a little differently.

I do think you have a decent stash to start with though.  You should be able to figure out if you like the functionality of pocket diapers/all-in-twos with what you have.  Then if the fit is off or something else is not working exactly like you'd hoped you can try some different brands.  Or if you don't like the way they work at all you can go in a totally different direction (prefolds or fitteds with covers, true all-in-ones, etc.).  Good luck mama, there are lots of CD options... hopefully you will find something that works great for you!
