DS had a cold 4 weeks ago which turned into a normal cough 3 weeks ago (typical for him). 2 weeks ago his cough was almost gone but then suddenly got worse once we returned home from Christmas travels...frequent but not severe. He had no other symptoms by this time. 1 week ago his cough changed a bit where sometimes his last cough would be drawn out instead of a quick stomach contraction and he would keep expelling air for 3 seconds or so (it sounds horrible but doesn't phase him at all). The same thing happened after his last cold in October but not so bad and didn't last as long.

He's never had long bouts of intense coughing where he lost his breath or couldn't breathe or throw up or turned blue or had lots of mucus or anything even close. His cough has slowly improved but is still there. Dr said he wanted to see him yesterday and examined him and said his lungs, nose, ears, throat, etc. were all completely clear, normal and healthy.

I specifically asked about whooping cough because DH's parents were visiting over the weekend and are convinced DS has it. The dr. wasn't concerned and said he seemed totally healthy other than the cough.

So, my question is: could someone with whooping cough have a completely normal exam? Wouldn't there be some sign of the illness? And his cough just doesn't seem to fit the profile...his coughing bouts aren't long enough to make him lose breath or "whoop". I'm asking because even after we told MIL she is still convinced he has wc.
