We got these when our toddler was a few months old. I had read positive comments about them here. But I think they were not worth it for us. They were expensive, and if much pressure was put on them, the baby could fall out of the bed. (It happened once, but we have a low bed, so it wasn't that big of a deal. Mostly just made me feel a little guilty and annoyed at the pillows!) As a result, the baby always slept between my husband and me, and if I was nursing her on the other side, I was constantly awakening to make sure she didn't get too close to the edge.
I think if I had to do it again, I would try much cheaper (though uglier and plastic) bed rail things, or maybe just not get anything and trust my watchfulness. Now we don't use anything and it's fine.
