Another BLW question...

My 9 mo DS is still nursing every 2-3 hours, and 2-3 times during the night (he sleeps about 10 hours other than waking up to nurse). I am fine with BM being his primary source of nutrition, but he loves solids and I wonder how much he should be getting in a day so as not to interfere with nursing. So far we offer solids twice a day, and he is very enthusiastic about it.

Also, what foods and spices should I absolutely avoid? We aren't doing any dairy (he had a sensitivity when I ate dairy, and DH and I both have dairy issues) berries, citrus, honey, nuts, or wheat products. I'm sticking with whole foods, but I always wonder if it's ok if he has some of the veggies I make for DH and I that might have garlic or other spices on it. Are all vegetables ok?

I think veggies are all fine, and so are spices-- in fact my girl prefers food with good flavor and spice! Salt is the only thing I'd actively avoid from the seasonings category, since it's too easy for little ones to get too much salt.

As for how much he should be eating, I would think offering 2-3 times a day would be fine. If you notice a drop in his nursing and you want it to pick back up, just offer less. I don't think there's an exact science to it, KWIM?

DD (9 months) loves (LOVES!!!!) puffed rice cereal.  I pour it on her tray and she dives for it and tries to pick them all up.  It's completely non-nutritive and negligible in calories, but I feel like it's a good challenge to her fine motor skills.  Maybe offer your LO a super low calorie practice food once a day that he can just have fun with without you worrying about its effect on his nursing intake.
