Road trip snack ideas?

Thread Starter

We live in a fairly rural area and spend a lot of time in the car.  I'm in a rut snack-wise and have found myself recently buying a lot of pre-packaged junk to give to my kids for the sheer convenience of having something that is easily portable and won't go bad if it isn't kept cold.

I need ideas for snacks that are easily portable, don't require refrigeration and won't be messy in the car etc etc.  Does anyone have suggestions?

I've been cheating a bit because my youngest is 8 weeks old.  I don't have much time or energy.

I make a trail mix of  Kashi cereal, raw sunflower seeds or almonds, lots of raisins, and a few mini marshmallows and chocolate chips thrown in.  All four of my older kids (ages 7,8, 12 and 13) will eat it.

It has protein, fiber, and dried fruit.  I try to convince myself there isn't that much sugar in it.

Otherwise I pack mini pb and j on whole wheat bread sandwiches and fruit or dried fruit and sunflower seeds.

I make my dd eat vegetables in the car.  Captive audience, and all that.  I wash and core a sweet pepper and have her eat it.  I give her a bowl of cold leftover sauteed red cabbage.  I used to give her snack sized or sandwich size bags of blanched green beans or broccoli until she got tired of it.

I skewer six beans (red kidney or white canellini or sometimes garbonzo, from a can drained and rinsed)  on a toothpick shish kebob style, and have her eat a bunch of those.

Slice of bread and butter.

Banana.

Peeled clementine orange in a ziplock bag.

I keep a bag of popcorn cakes (actually rice/popcorn blend) on hand for snacking.

If I feel like my dd won't make a mess, I pack a rice cake spread with some kind of nut butter.

I draw the line at messy liquidy stuff like apple sauce or yogurt.

Most of these (except for the banana and bread and popcorn cakes and rice cakes), I keep in an insulated lunch bag with a frozen gel pack.

Dry fruit always works great for us. Dried mango (no sugar added), raisins, nuts, cranberries, etc. I also like Happy Baby organic puffs, great to have in the diaper bag all the time. My DD also loves fresh veggies of any kind! Pieces of cucumber, carrots, cherry tomatoes.
