Affordable non-toxic KING size mattress?

We are in the market for a king size mattress. Me, my DH & my 2 yo. all sleep in a very old queen right now and it's getting pretty small. Plus we will definitely need a king before we have another baby. The only thing I've liked about the one we have  is that it's so old (at least 15 years) I didn't have to worry about off-gassing. We need a king but every time I try to find one that's organic or free of flame retardants the prices are sky high!!  Any suggestions??

To be totally honest, I don't think there is one out there. We sleep on a queen mattress, it's cramped but that's the way it is. You might be able to buy a 'second' from a company that makes them. Otherwise try looking for a used one. Non-toxic mattresses are very, very expensive but you get what you pay for. No one 'needs' a king size mattress, it's a luxury and organic/non-toxic ones are even more of a luxury. I think the only realistic option is saving up for one.

I just thought of something else. What about a larger non-toxic futon style mattress?

What's your budget? You can get an awesome organic latex mattress for about 2000$, which really is not that much more than a good quality mattress from a regular store. If you are on a lower budget, you can get a decent mattress from IKEA. They have some with natural latex and do not use flame retardants. You can pair it with a good mattress topper for added safety.

Actually I just double-checked and IKEA mattresses in the US have an added flame retardant layer that they don't have here in Canada. You should go check them out anyway as it is probably easy to remove since their mattresses can be unzipped on the side.

Oh, and I disagree that a King sized mattress is some sort of unjustifiable luxury. It makes all the difference in the world for me and I'm single. I can't imagine how I would ever manage to sleep with another adult and 2 kids in a Queen sized bed.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try Ikea. I don't think my husband would go for a futon-style. A king isn't just a luxury it's something that will allow us to co-sleep for much longer, which is very important to me - and my little one :) .  I don't think the queen we have is even the size of a regular queen these days b/c all of our newer queen size sheets swallow it.
